Anyone know about cars? Bit of help, please!

Found 1st Sep 2008
Evening all.

I have a 2001 Citroen Picasso (2.0L diesel) and gradually over the past couple of months black smoke has started coming from the exhaust when I accelerate.
Just this past week it has got really bad and I now notice that the power has gone down, too.

Gonna pop it into a garage but just wondered if anyone could give me some ideas as to what it could be?

emissions?

ok same happened to me but not a diesel-was cylinder head gaskets i believe. The car wasnt worth repairing then as it was worth about £800 tops...it started small smoke and ended after several weeks people behind me at lights used to do a windscreen wiper manouver-lol
power was also lost during that time-quite funny at the time-was my first car..

Sounds like a broken diesel injector ..........I used to work driving vans and cars all diesel and they ahd similar problems like you describe.......and a lot of the time it was a broken diesel injector/pipe.

Not a big problem but was time consuming......

I would go to a diesel specialist for a FREE look at and possible fix at an agreed price but NOT take to Citroen main dealer cos they will charge about £70-£90 an hour and the fix will be way over the top.

sound like the air flow sensor (aka maf sensor)

had same problem with renault trafic diesel(when accelerating there was a lot of black smoke and not much power,,also uses a lot of fuel)
replaced the air flow sensor and been great since

Burning oil, check the oil level.

more than likely burning too much diesel if its black smoke,,,,oil would be whitish grey smoke

which is why its more likely to be the air flow sensor gone as this tells the engine managment system how much air/fuel mixture is needed(hence adding more fuel, causing black smoke)

burning oil produces blue to black smoke depending on how much has mixed with the fuel

exactly same thing has been happening to my car its embarassing!

....its embarassing!

well it is a lada :whistling:

easy checks are the oil level and a clean air filter

burning oil is unlikely to affect the power that much though

more likely

faulty injectors/pump
air filter
head or valves

I'll go for the injectors being the problem

A cheap possible fix would be try some Forte in the car, its pretty good and could clean it without going to a garage, about £12 a bottle

EDIT: forteuk.co.uk/Die…htm that

Agree, but i was suggesting what can be checked before MrsZ goes the garage, can't see her checking the injectors, valves or sensors, no offence MrsZ ;-)

As for engine treatments, they can cause more problems than you started with.

Agreed, but Forte stuff is very good, in fact it isn't that easy to find as it's usually trade only, but smaller shops will usually stock it (or used to be trade only, not sure if its widely available now). Redex etc is rubbish and wouldn't put any of it near my car!

Thanks all - much appreciated.

Have already had an oil change and the air filter changed and also OH also used a treatment which was recommended to him but none of these made a difference.

Was researching the problem on Google before asking here and did find suggestions for the injectors a few times.

Would I get into trouble with the police for driving with it like this? I have been right in front of them a couple of times and tried to drive very lightly and they didn't stop me.

i have just exchanged my tesco vouchers to give the car a major service and put it through mot so hopefully that should solve it

You could well do, the vehicle is almost certainly illegal in that condition, depending on how much smoke it is churning out.
