anyone know anything about screen refresh rates and screen flickering ?

i bought a crt from dixons the £10 all in, it was new sealed etc, ive had it on for a few weeks now and on the bottom left hand corner its been flashing a little, but then i changed the refresh rate to 75 Hertz from 60 Hertz and the flickering has stopped is that normal. would it be better for me to exchange it, or just leave it now, as its stopped and working properly. thanks in advance

If you go back into refresh rate settings you will see a tick box "only show refresh rates supported by this monitor". Tick this - you will now see if you can go a bit higher - probably to 85H.
The only time I have seen flickering/shaking in one corner of a CRT display was caused by a desk fan (this was well known when CRT's were common in offices). It was cured by changing the refresh rate. I can't imagine that you are using a fan when it is freezing cold!

wheres the refresh rate settings your talking about cylinder ? what im doing is im right clicking on desktop --> settings -->(new box) monitor --> drop down which gives me the option of 60 or 75 hertz and then underneath that i can see something which says Hide modes that this monitor cannot display, but even once ticked it still gives me the same refresh rates. do you think it should be ok on 75 hertz now. i dont know much about refresh rates would be grateful for some help. rep given for replying  thanks

Yes - that means that 75 is the top rated supported by your monitor. That's fine - I can't see any difference between 75 and 85 on my own CRT. I reckon you got a bargain. I have a brand new LG monitor sitting on my desk, not even turned on, because I just prefer the "less harsh" image that I get on my CRT monitor !

i rang dixons up today , and they go they would exchange it, then i said you havent had any on the site for a good while now, and the guy goes instead well just give you a replacement of which ever next best, but they made a cowboy mess of it, i was suppose to get an email. saying when i t was going to get picked up, so rang after a few hours as i never recieved email, and they said theres nothing on our computers mentioning a return and i got passed on to two three people and they all said the same, so im just going to keep it now. i just didnt want to have a monitor which was going to die out even before usuing it properly. thanks for that though, now it sorted, im just gonna use this until it starts randomely stretching and thinning like my old crt lol

75hz is fine, its the optimal refresh rate for most crt's i've used, the flickering is usual at lower refresh rates, i'm sure your monitor is fine and an absolute bargain at the price you paid

why are you trying to return it? Its not faulty. 60hz will show flickering to most people on CRTs.

Flicking at 60hz is normal and can be noticed by some people. It's because CRTs flash between black and the picture and the refresh rate is the number of times this happens, with more being less noticible.
