    Anyone know how long you supposed to open red wine before you drink it ??

    Got the in laws coming round to night and their VERY in to their wine. I've just paid a silly amount for a few bottles. I know you're supposed to open it to let it get to room temp before you down it, but does anyone know how long that is ???

    Open it and leave it a couple of hours.

    2 hours at room temp should do it,keep it away from heat sources etc radiators/sunlight

    as long as it hasn't been in the fridge then an hour or so will be fine... taste it and see if it is any good first... good luck and hope you have a great night in with your inlaws... (if it was me I would have just given them a glass of Lambrini...LOL) but then i just have outlaws...LOL

    open it, turn it upside down whilst putting its top in the kitchen sink hole and go watch tv
    return after a few hours
    it will taste wicked, plus no hang overs of any kind what so ever. enjoy

    It's not so much the temperature, which should as you say be room temp, as the exposure to air. When the wine mixes with the oxygen in the air it affects the tannins, but the tannins are important for the taste of a good red so you don't want to overdo the exposure. Just opening the bottle has more-or less no effect. The easiest way to aerate is to pour the wine into nice glasses and leave for 15 minutes. Even better is to decant - into a jug would do ( unknowledgeable wine snobs might shriek) , which also means that you can leave any sediment in the bottle!!

    I personally, in your situation, would ask the in-laws how they would suggest you deal with the wine - humble, nice, conversation taken care of!!

    As above, also depends on the wine. If it is a very deep/dark red like cab sav it should be at least room temp. If it a lighter red Pinot Noir for example they are nice slightly chilled.

    Pouring a cheap wine into a jug (quickly so it glugs) makes it taste much better.

    Great advice....I can tell you have a lot of long conversations about wine.......personally......I get drunk on wine in next to no time but can handle any other drink. :-D
