Good luck with your on-line venture....I get the feeling you are going to need it.

I've done plenty of Magento installs, it really does depend on your host because it has so many specific requirements unlike most other free open-source scripts.

Also, (please don't get me wrong, I'm just speaking from experience), if you can't get past the installation then chances are you'll probably get stuck further down the line too because it's such a big thing to setup right and there's plenty of things you can easily overlook when setting up.
You might want to look at other lightweight alternatives such as Prestashop, or pay someone to do the work for you.

Whatever you do, stay clear of OSCommerce and ZenCart, they're well past their sell-by date and superseded by newer scripts like Magento...

More to the point, what part of the install are you actually stuck on? Have you ever installed any other script in the past?

Here is my .htaccess, you can try it for nothing.
Hostgator says it supports magento but you have to moddify the .htacces to get it work. After that everything worked spot on.

I have successfully installed and used oscommerce for 4 years but would like to upgrade my website and want to try magento, seems theres something wrong with the version i have tried to install. The problem is magento connect manager is missing so I cant add the modern theme extension. It seems a lot of people have had this problem in the past but no one has explained how they rectified it
