Anyone know how to stop the scam phone calls I keep on getting from Indian call centres?

Must be the 20th call I've had in 3 months - they keep saying that I they have recieved an error report from my computer.
Obviously I know that this is a scam to get money from me and access by computer database so I hang up. Can't do 1471 to get number - any way of stopping them without changing my number?
Also had calls saying that I have 'hundreds' of pounds of bank charges that I can claim back.

If your with BT you can pay for like a no noisense call block (don't know the name) but we have it and have hardly a thing.

You registered with TPS ??

It wont stop the calls at the moment, but will help long term.

I found that if you tell them they are SCAMMERS.. they don't seem to call back! If they tend to not get an answer from you, they keep trying!

Yes registered with TPS and don't get any normal cold calls. basically I tell them to go away I'm not stupid and that they are scammers (well maybe not quite as polite)
First couple of times it was quite funny as I tryed to make a record of how long they would hold on the line for me (went on mute - but put on loud speaker) got to 34 mins before they hung up - lots of 'hello misses are you still there?'

I agree that TPS is quite good for holding back calls. If someone does ring I usually ask them how they got my number as I'm registered with TPS. They usually hang up at that point. I think you do need to re-register with TPS every 6 months or so incase you've purchased goods on line and unwittingly opened yourself up to junk mail again.
To this particular overseas caller you could tell them they have a wrong number because you don't open a computer.

ask them their name and the company they work for, tell them you are recording the call, have their number/details and you are giving it all to the police. it worked when we had them a few months ago, not had a call since

Will go down the line of saying call is being recorded for police record if (when) they call again

Tell em to eff off. I was having loads of calls to my mobile from a company called paparazzi. They always asked for Neil. Not me. Two days ago I lost my temper and had a huge rant at them. Jo calls since

Just go along with them for a laugh. Keep giving them a made up credit card number and stuff. Have a bit of fun. They're paying for the call. Ask his name then keep getting it wrong. Anything. Just bug them like they try to bug you

I am registered with TPS but still get these calls - sometimes they ring back straight after you have put the phone down. I never give my number when I complete any forms or I give my old mobile number if it won't let me do 01234 567890!

Imagine if that's the OP's number...

Just repeat everything they say back to them like it's a question and see how long they stay on the line.

Play along, they once phoned me 7 times in one day so i went mental down the phone they never seemed to have called me back now.

I have had the odd one where I have gone mental at them. Depends who you get as some see this as an incentive to call again.
I like deeks idea. Think up a name that is really long and unpronouncible. Say you need to spell it out and keep spelling it differently.

I threatened to call the police and I've not had one since.

how about answering by saying "Hello, your through to the internet fraud department, how can i help you?"

I doubt the threat made any difference - just the realisation they were talking to someone who wasn't the full ticket!

I normally just leave the phone on the side and carry on with whatever I was doing.. Some of them stay there for a really long time, amazing really! Either that or blow a whistle down the phone, my personal attack alarm is pretty good for that too.. Half the time I don't bother even picking it up, calls come through our Livebox line and only family have that number, the rest go to our landline.. which I rarely bother with!

Only a retard would answer using someone elses name then make silly noises, so yes it may well have been.

The problem only started after I moved house and connected to BT phone and broadband. They know my name and address but its dead easy to get that info unless you choose not to be listed.

That bank charges one I get often at work and pressed th option to take the call before telling them ex-directory number etc... only to be told if I selected 9 (from memory) at the end of the call, the number would be removed from their database. So far so good - its been at least a week since that happened - and like you seemed to be getting the calls quite frequently.

Call them a bayne-chawd

just get an answerphone and set it to answer after 2 rings. Somehow they are on to this and stop ringing you.

works for me as hardly ever get any rogue calls

TPS works great too.

wind them up by pretending you are running linux and dont have 'start' on your pc
or go through everything then give them a fake card number, when they question it say its a barcode from a christmas card as you don't have a bank account

LOl.....we do the same, they hate it,and makes it fun for us!!!
Once one bloke goes on loud speaker.....thanks for being so rude and waste his time..lol!WELL thats what you do to us chaps!34 mins wow!Think ours is 12 mins!

So there really isn't a way to stop it then?!
I work part-time in evenings and weekends so I get these bloody calls during the day about five times every week - Mocrosoft Windows Support, Online PC Doctor, etc etc. What I find amazing is I DON'T HAVE A COMPUTER IN MY HOUSE as I've told them 30 or more times. They keep calling back as if it's the first time.
Lately they've switched to asking about my Sky subscription and posing as a company called Survey UK (UK? Yeah right!)
We've got 1571 so I often just unplug the phone. Any other ideas please?

Great thing about smartphones is that you can get apps to block certain mobile numbers. If I ever get an unsolicited call, they go straight on "the list"!

There's that product called TrueCall (or something), which filters landline calls but they could really do with bringing out phones with call filtering as standard. My Android app works by instantly hanging up on them.

Perhaps you could try pretending you're a police officer. Or maybe an MI6 agent! You're on the way to India the next day and you'll be paying them an visit unless they stop calling!

I keep on getting the 'Our records show that you have had an accident'. I just reply saying that my family and I have been very lucky and have not had any accidents, they usually giggle a bit, and say 'have a good day'.
I'm fed up with them, especially on my mobile as I don't expect it as much and think it's invading my personal space even more than the the calls on the landline.

i keep etting this lately - i say 'i dont have a pc?' and put the phone down

I find that call screening with the answerphone stops or limits all manner of nuisance calls. Downside is that callers sometimes just hang up. But as I have all inclusive calls in my package I can ring them back when it suits me as long as they have not withheld their number. People who know me have got used to the 'security' system and generally opt to leave a message or at least announce themselves. The rest are probably people I dont really want to talk with anyway.

WIN WIN!

This is a tactic if you are plagued by mobile or cell phone callers - it wont work on land lines.

1. when the call comes dont ever answer it but definitely add it to your address book on the phone. give it a name like scam1 scam2 scam 3 etc etc depending on how many numbers call you.
2. then use the audio record function on your phone to record 1 second (or less) of ABSOLUTE SILENCE. in other words dont record any sound of any kind.
3. save the 1 second of silence in your ringtones
4. then simply allocate the 1 second of silence ringtone to any number that is pestering you
5Easy. they can ring and ring and ring but you will never ever hear it and they will get fed up.
