Anyone know of a pay monthly PC repair place? and query

We had cover for the £8.99 a month for the PC performance with PC world, we stupidly stopped the payments and now i have run a long test on the Bios and it says Hard disk1 replace as its failed....oh no !!!
    error code 10008

Can i start this PC performance back up or was it only when we bought the laptop do you get the PC performance "pay as you go" support etc etc
Is there any PC cover out there that we can take back up and help us on our way lol

    thanks for any help

Yes you can start PC performance again - but they will want to check the PC first.

What your trying to do is tantamount to fraud tbh.

could do, dont know how much it would cost ....plus i would have to get Vista installed

You know, if i thought that I people would actually send machines to me to be repaired then I would start up a business tomorrow.

In answer to the OP have a look in the yellow pages or local papers for a local PC repair guy, but dont expect to pay less than £75 plus the cost of a hard drive to fix your problem.

For the record a 500GB hdd would set you back around £40 then there is the cost of fitting and OS install. This is where the money comes in. I used to charge £50 for an OS install (with drivers etc) and would have fitted the HDD for nothing but expect to pay more than that for a local guy coming to your house to do the same thing.

Has anyone looked up the error code? Has a loose connection and the possibility of fixing the issue by running a thorough disk check been ruled out?

Is the laptop out of warranty?

Make sure you write down your vista product key if you still can.

Seriously, people charge £75 to fit a hard drive? Think I'll open a repair shop!

OP - hard drive will be about £40 (well, depending on size), vista you should already have the serial no on a sticker on the laptop so you just need a disk and its easy enough to install.

OP does not know how much a HDD would cost them, so I would assume connection issues and chkdsk is well beyond them.

Did a reinstall the other day for someone and a local shop wanted to charge £120 to install vista and drivers on a fresh drive the customer had already bought.

Did a build a few weeks before with components a customer had bought where a local guy from the free paper wanted to charge £180 (I kid you not!) to put the thing together and install the OS.

There is plenty of money to be made out there, thats for sure, and people are paying it too.

Again, its only easy enounh if you have done it before. Even on the first time, it might be possible but if there are no driver cds about then it takes a bit of noddle to locate the correct ones from the net and install them.

It does not matter that your guarantee has run out. the hard drive is not fit for purpose and they will have to replace it. That is the law. Anyway why would you pay insurance in the first year when its under guarantee .

How is it not fit for purpose, when all you know is that it broke in around a year? It could of been dropped etc.

And PC Performance is more than insurance fwiw.

I pressed F10 at the start to go into BIOS, and clicked right til i got to Diagnostic.

this is where i ran a long and short test plus a memory test

    memory test passed
    hard drive short test passed
hard drive LONG test stopped at 56% and came up with - Failed - Replace hard disk 1 (Warranty ID - error code 10008)

if you cant boot then regcure wont help. regcure fixes registry errors. the Long test you are running is doing a bios HDD check. Might just be a case of bad sectors so you might want to try booting to DOS and running

    CHKDSK /F

    to fix sector errors.

if windows wont load after that then try a complete format and reinstall of windows.

+1 If it's a HDD error and if chkdsk /r won't fix it, then you should reinstall the OS. Failing that, replace the drive. But I'd say you could back up any data off it by running as a slave on another machine, as frequently the whole drive isn't wrecked.

surely there must be a fellow HDK to help you out that lives local (ish) ... where you from

I guess you must have another machine when you're posting to the forum at the moment? Did the machine come with any recovery or operating system CDs?

I'd agree with previous suggestions to try a chkdsk either through booting a Windows Vista CD and going to the recovery console or using a bootable CD such as the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCDWin). Admittedly though when a bios system detects a hard drive failure I tend to find it's quite accurate although the chkdsk will back it up, if it's finding many errors then the hard drive has a serious problem.

These days it is not diffcult to replace the hard drive in a PC and build it with Vista, this operating system has many drivers builtin so there's no hassle with sata drivers and as long as you download all the drivers you need from the manufacturers site first to a USB stick or similar ready for the new build. Once up and running it's well worth considering an imaging tool such as Acronis which means if your Hd fails or you want to rebuild it's just a case of hooking up a drive and restoring an image taken of your system earlier.

Thankfully I don't have to rely on home visit IT repairs for my work so I just do it all for nothing, I couldn't charge people the amounts mentioned in this thread especially when it's more than the PC is probably worth.

Lol - Good spot! How are you managing to post on here if laptop wont boot?

Its easy to reinstall the OS and you have to learn sometime rather than paying someone £70+ each time just to pess a few buttons
