anyone know of a website where my son (10) can chat safely

or is it best to wait till he is a teen? he wants to chat to kids his own age about games, films etc. Can't seem to find anything geared towards his age mmm maybe there's a reason for this!!!!!

do you have msn? My boys, 11 and 13, talk to their mates on there. They only talk to people they know and I regard it the safest option. Obviously as they get older they will move on to chatrooms, but Im happy for them to be on MSN whilst still so young. x

Just say hes 13 and then when hes talking to people hel say hes 11 - no harm done:thumbsup:

Any website (within reason) as long as they are supervised.

MSN is free to download and if he asks his mates at school he will probably find quite a few have it......once set up he can get their addys and chat away with them.

i wouldnt let any 10, 12 or even 16 year old on the internet these days its seems like no where is safe online in rooms as the (you know whos) find newer and better ways to get in these rooms and cause all kindsa mischief

even if his mates dont have it - he will become a trend setter and everyone will get it

    myspace...?

my daughter always used Habbo hotel-but i wasnt too happy anyway. Have a look first see what you think?

They make a character and move around. I cant recall much about it other than that, she just uses msn now and facebook-myspace

the way i see it is they will do it anyway-friends have it and they can even access at the library! its better done with supervision and after we have educated them.
Having said that it took a while befoe my daughter realised the 'boy from italy' she was talking too could easily have been 'the dirty old man down the road' (not that we have one-lol)

So you think! ya never know...

OP I wouldnt let them use chatrooms and thats from someone who used them years ago...lot of sick ****s out there...unless your child has a lot of smarts about them I wouldnt let them go anywhere near them...not until they are at least 13...

Agree with Bitsey though...MSN is the best thing as its people he knows...free to download too...just search for Windows Live Messenger and download from Microsoft

    called arg.com

You could check on the childline site - they offer some safety advice but I can't see a recommended site for chat...
    childline.org.uk/Inf…spx

They also have a link to this site which is also worth a look
    chatdanger.com/

i would only let my kids on msn with their mates, they can group chat on there

Sex Advice and tips - i would have avoided that for my 10yr old

    seconded, not needed IMO

my son is 10, and there is not a chance i would let him near any sort of chat site. he can play kids flash games and thats it. maybe browse ebay for computer games and pokemon. If a 10 year old wants to chat, send him out to play with his pals.

MSN is the best advice as my daughter has been on there since year 6, most of her past and present school mates are on there as well and it also helps with homework worries etc...........One word of advice, keep the pc somewhere in a communal room so that there are no secrets, it has worked well with all my kids and is one of the main childline bits of advice.

send him off to the local youth group

I'm not a big fan of letting kids chat in cyberspace........too many sick individuals hiding behind technology. You only have to look at some ex/current members here for a start. They know it's a site accessible by children yet they spout the most obscene stuff which gets pulled eventually but the MODs have a hard time keeping up with it.

none are safe, its your son you have to make safe, not the net

I agree with the others who mentioned MSN - my 8 year old uses it but only when I am around and he does not know how to add anyone. If he wants to add someone I will do it for him once I know exactly who they are. I allow him 2 hours a week and that is it - otherwise I would never get on there :-D

Agreed. Adults take things too far and slip up too often on the net... just put the kid in a youth group. It'll teach him how to make real friends and he'll learn social skills among other things.

habbo hotel.. if its still about

My 9 year old sister and 7 year old nephew use a disney site called club penguin - if you google that you should find it. It's about £2 a month or something similar, but that's only if you want to be able to do all the shopping things and upgrade your igloo. You can just do the games and chat for free.

I had a look at it out of curiosity to see what they were up to, and there's all these penguins milling around and anything they're saying to each other comes up in a big speech bubble on screen for everyone to see, so there's no private chat. It's like a little penguin community so they can go shopping and play mini games etc. And the best thing is it's watched over by a kind of mod at all times so if anyone says anything a bit off, they get banned. Bit like here :-D

Not used it but it says this is a child friendly and monitored chat site: kidchatters.com/
