Does anyone know what these slim rectangular cameras are on the lamp posts popping up everywhere?

Googled it and cannot find a single image that looks like what i'm talking about.

Some are stating ANPR but then the images they use don't look like what i've seen.

Never got the chance to photograph one as i've always been driving.

Done a drive past in the locations i've seen them with google street view but the images must be old so they don't show.

Probably ANPR. Since the tax disc had disappeared these have appeared everywhere.
If it's anpr I'm sure they got to put up signs like the dvla vans had to.
Used as census points? To check the number of vehicles using certain routes, busiest route, etc. I believe they also have 2 black wires running across the road which also counts the vehicles that drive over it
Do you have a picture?

This is the most likely.
Any of these? Roadside spy cameras

I saw a policeman step out of a vehicle and position one on a post in Hemel. It was gone a few days later.
Those rubber strips are usually only one strip if counting vehicles the double strips are to monitor speed so authorities know where to place speed traps or traffic calming etc. Hence why it annoys me when people are still stupid enough to speed when passing them, months later they'll complain about the speed bumps etc.
The two strips are for direction not speed, that's why the second strip is usually only on one carriageway.

 No it's none of those.

There aren't any rubberized wires going across the road either, these are usually connected to a padlocked metal box, I've seen these numerous times.

I spent a few hours last night searching the internet trying to find a photo and couldn't find a single one, I tried every wording I could think of.

Next time I see one I'll park up and photograph it, (them I should say, as there's usually two together one pointing each way)
Are they peli cases
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=peli+case&prmd=ivns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj3nMS-2snKAhUCAxoKHWTkDy4Q_AUIBigB

Or just radars
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Agd+radar&tbm=isch&oq=Agd+radar&gs_l=mobile-heirloom-serp.3..0i24.402888.416385.0.417352.32.13.6.12.12.2.360.1570.8j3j1j1.13.0....0...1c.1.34.mobile-heirloom-serp..3.29.1521.D6R6t8QKssg

The peli case will contain the same radar but in one unit with any other equipment.

Councils and LAs use these to monitor roads, after a week or so they will be retrieved along with a list containing the time and speed of every vehicle. This will let them review current road use, to help decide if an alternative route is needed to direct traffic away from an village, maybe school flashing beacons are needed if alot of through traffic at school times, or maybe there needs to be speed limit reminders put up if traffic tends to be too fast
It's neither of those kind of things.

I've looked again and I still can't find anything.

To try and explain the size and shape if you look at this photo. The camera I'm talking about looks a similar size and shape to the middle item in this photo.

Then it has 2 or 3 lenses on the long thin edge, these then face the road.

Definitely need to get a photo as I can feel people's eagerness to see what I'm talking about

Why don't you post where it is and link to google maps, someone more local will be able to answer surely.

However from your description it does sound like Police/DVLA/Council ANPR cameras. They could also be traffic monitoring cameras.
Any pictures yet ?
It's on Thorne Road, Belton Near Doncaster.
If I get the chance tomorrow, I'll drive over there again and take a photo.

Its 20 mins each way from my house....... the things I do for HUKD
Is it just for checking for traffic flow, so when radio stations say, looking at the A30 at bodmin there 3 mile queues, long delays, slow moving traffic etc

Bus Lane camera. … Bus Lane camera. ?http://www.westernmorningnews.co.uk/Thousands-snapped-Plymouth-bus-lane-cameras/story-17214487-detail/story.html

Definitely not a bus lane camera, buses don't go down this road and its only a single carriageway anyway
So no one know what these are used for then?

Lamposts.
These are extremely likely to be ANPR cameras. 2 IR illuminators and a central camera.

The configuration of the 'lenses' makes other options unlikely - you don't need 3 for speed monitoring or traffic counting. You do need IR illumination if you're trying to read number plates 24/7 though.
Thanks for the comments.

Beginning to think they are ANPR cameras now.

Whilst i was trying to find out what these were i also came across this:

http://www.lep.co.uk/news/community/residents-in-belton-aim-to-get-lorries-to-kill-their-speed-1-7175571

Which again points towards these not being speed cameras, but saying that this article is almost a year old now so things could have changed.
