Anyone rented an apartment in New York before, instead of using a hotel?

Thinking of doing this instead of staying at the overpriced hotels available...anyone had any experience of this or any suggestions? Appreciate your time

Try "Craiglist", I know my brother has used this method a few times.

never book hotels, usually condos or apartments which work out cheaper if you know the areas and don't mind living on outskirts of Manhattan.

Last used Broadway apartments and had a condo opposite Macy's but they no longer operate unfortunately.

how much are guns in new york ?

I'm going to ignore the guns comment but watch this thread with interest.

You see I am a very naughty boy. I break hotel and holiday company web sites. I enter the fact that I want somewhere to stay and there is me, my wife and 3 children and select find .... and the websites crash! It's almost as if having anymore than 2 kids is illegal as hotel booking systems can't cope.

So I would like to know about appartments in NY as well!

I've also stayed here! Has my full recommendation - great little place

We rented an apartment on Staten Island, which has the advantage of having great views over the Manhattan skyline and being only 30 minute FREE ferry ride to Manhattan (with great views on the way!).

We stayed in this apartment, which will cater for quite a few people at a cost much less than a hotel room on Manhattan.....

    Hope that helps someone!

Thanks everyone - some good tips!

Have rented a studio The Atruim on Bleecker St, in the Village and one on West 50th (or thereabouts) through Metrohomes a number of times, though I notice they don't rent Bleecker anymore. A couple of other agencies now rent Bleecker but would definitely recommend the location. Bear in mind that apartments in NYC aren't all fabulous loft style, they often are worse for wear and fittings are cheap and old but that all adds to the NYC experience and is just what many apartments are like in NYC. Bleecker despite being in a lively area was a very quiet apartment and they also have 1/2 bed rooms as well though you will find a studio much cheaper (just check that the quality of the sofa bed is good enough, some are rubbish).
If you fancy another location I would really recommend Metrohomes!
