    Anyone tried Beef Jerky?

I was looting the local sainsburys late last night looking for junk food. I came across a packet of Beef Jerky. I bought it (£2.35!) and ate it.

Kind of rubbery, but actually quite tasty.

Anyone else tried this imported tire rubber?
I may go back for some more later.

You do know why it's called Beef Jerky?

I've never bought it here, but had it in the US when I lived there for a bit and it was great. I prefer the much drier, saltier version rather than the soft version which is more like biltong that you can get from south african shops here in the uk.

    lol, no.

But this is the part where you tell me ive been munching on cow scrotum...

I eat it every day. I eat it as a snack between meals. It is very nutritious with plenty of protein and little else. I buy it from Costco though the "oberto" beef jerky. I cannot remember the price but it is alot cheaper than buying is supermarkets and you get a lot more of it to.

It is just Beef mate :0

The pack I had, it was just little bits of it, little cm squares.
My jaw was butchered after it though!

OMG it's beef testicles :w00t: no way would you get me eatin' that!

Bloody horrible! Like eating salted burnt curtly wurlies!

Lovely stuff... I could easily live on it. That and biltong...

Never tried it its usually next to the pork scratchings.

Yeah but the pork scratchings are really unhealthy where as Jerky is really healthy. Its a marmite food you hate it or love it. I must admit it does not look very appertising... lol

I love beef jerky, but whilst it may not be as bad for you as pork scratchings, it's still smoked red meat (watch that blood pressure soar), and unless you fork out for premium varieties, jerky is also usually loaded with salt, artificial flavourings and preservatives. Hardly what any nutritionist would refer to as "really healthy".

Smoked and processed meats (particularly red meats) are thought to be one of the leading causes of digestive tract cancers, and anyone who eats this on a regular basis as a "healthy" snack should seriously consider switching to fruit or vegetables as an alternative.

it's really nice If it's the one I got from morrisons it has a kind of barbecue sauce taste to it

True, however it is a snack as i said. As you already stated it depends on the brand as well, the Oberto range is a healthy all around snack. Fruit contains a lot of sugar so to much fruit would not be good for you either. As with anything its moderation

    my 3 year old loves it, he's a fab eater will eat anything x x x x x

lol he has always been fussy even when i was weaning him, he can't stand roast dinners, if I put one in front of him to eat he will gag and be sick, so I always have to cook seperate for him which is a pain and he is soooooooooo skinny cos he don't eat much.

mind you he's always been small he was only 4lbs 15 oz born and his little brother is almost as big as him, people have asked me are they twins as they are almost the same size. They wear the same size clothes and got the same size feet and nearly the same weight but there's 3 years between them.

lol, I had the same syndrome when I was a little one. The doctor actually prescribed me Jam, as I was under-nourished and way too fussy, and it was to be used to get me a taste for different stuff. lol. Just wait till he starts to develop properly, you'll be none stop in the kitchen. I remember when I was about 11yr old, I went through a Spagetti phase, it was all I ate, every day.

awwwwww thanks for that, I think he's got a food phobia, remember that programme on tv where the girl would only eat chocolate and she would be gagging trying anything else that's what he's like. It annoys me as he won't even try new things if he don't like the look or smell of it.

Teryaki beef jerky Yumm.... And very healthy!!!!

Vegetarians may not like it though....:p

Yeh, I remember watching those programs. Addicted to chips and stuff like that I think.
I think thats why the doctor gave me Jam, lol. Ease me into different stuff via my taste buds. My mam used to mix it with porridge and stuff, jam sandwiches. Might be worth a punt.

worst comes to worst, try Marmite instead lol

lol at marmite, he likes jam sandwiches but prefers nutella x x x x x

    lol!

We used to take bags of this stuff hiking up into the mountains in the US. It is high protein ( high salt too often! ) When I want to make a high protein no carbs meal to carry in a bag, I'll use this or biltong and fruits.
