Anything out there similar to freecycle/gumtree?

You lot are usually helpful, so thought it is worth a shot.

I have been asked my the headmaster of my LO school to see if I can find any cookers, fridges, sofas, white goods etc to help some of the disadvantaged families in the area. But they must be free and in the central Stockport area, collection can be arranged but limits as to distance.

I have had a look on Freecycle, and tbh not much around the area, but have advised the headmaster to post a wanted ad! Gumtree isn't quite right, as people aren't really giving stuff away for free.

So my question is folks, are there any other sites similar to freecycle around?

Or better still anyone in the stockport area need to unload any old stuff like white goods or sofas etc.

I will add this is not for me, am not doing this to sell on (just wanted to address the cynics lol). If anybody does have anything of any use I shall simply pass your details on to the headmaster at the school.

    Thanks in advance folks!

Sorry to be cynical, but how would anybody know anything was actually going to disadvantaged families etc,is this part of a charity fundraiser at all ?

I think Freecycle is definitely your best bet. Join some groups near you as well, not just the one for your direct area. If you're using the stuff you get for charitable reasons, and giving it away, make sure you read the freecycle rules thoroughly, and things need to be fire retardant, and electrically safe. Near me we also have communityfreebay.co.uk and freegle (though I've never used it - Goolg ejust brought up freegle.org and ilovefreegle.org). Good luck! x

You don't, but can always forward anyone the email I have regarding this. It is not for fundraising, as the general state of any items is not at all important. If you know the Brinnington area at all, you prob would not ask the question! It is a council estate, and though not everyone is poor, there is a large number of disadvantaged families around here.

I don't blame you for being cynical, and tbh I expected a few cynics anyway, but just thought it would be worth a shot. I am not asking for full house set ups, just that if I could get even 1 bit (even a tatty old sofa) it will help somebody!

The general state of items is utterly important. Your heart's in the right place trying to help people out, but if you/the head whoever give away something electrically faulty and it causes a fire in someone's house, I imagine there will be some comeback. It's entirely different if the disadvantaged person asks for and collects it themselves, but for someone to be doing it for them charitably opens up a whole can of problems. (I'ts not like they've found it and asked you to pick it up for them... you're finding it and offering it to them as a gesture of charity...)

I was asking because some people might not want to donate stuff unless they were positive it was going to disadvantaged families etc, when i give stuff away on Freecycle,i don't mind what's done with it,even it's sold on.

I've not got anything to give away at the moment, but i'm in North Manc anyway, not sure if that's a little too far away.

i get what you mean, but am talking about general state meaning cosmetically.

I don't know the ins and outs, leaving that up to the head, just trying to help as best I can.

    Thanks for your input x

We've looked at loads of things in there, and, although nothing's ever been quite right for us, they are cheap as chips and bend over backward to help people.
