You'll probably do well to avoid AOL. They're a dying brand these days so I doubt the service has improved from the slow and cut-corner service of days gone by. The important bit of the old days for you isn't their upload speeds, but their latencies. AOL used to, and I expect still do, keep their UK servers overseas (I think, in France). This saved AOL money on taxes, although it shat all over the latencies and the online gaming experience.

but again DONT DO IT...its not even aol anymore if you get your speed for a test site its Carphone warehouse

    ^This

Go with Be / o2 if it's available in your area, absolutely no reason to touch AOL.

GF's nan is on AOL and my god are they a nightmare. Threatened to leave them as their service became completely unusable and they totally failed to recongise THEIR problem until much complaining. They also lied by saying her speed was capped to half a meg because of her location from the exchange - I called BS and told them she'd be going to Be the second I hang up. They then started her contract over @ £9/month, she now gets 8mb (no lower than 5) at this 'special' price. She still gets some dropouts and random slow loading which after testing I can put down to AOL's problem but nothing like before.

If you have the choice stay well clear of them - I've not touched them since dialup in '99.

ok i cant get O2 as its not in my area was thinking of plusnet

and BE is not available in my area either

Depends what package you subscribe to with Plus.net, performance will vary. Obviously the more you spend per month the higher your traffic's priority will be.

Poor peak data limit, unlimited downloading from midnight till 8am - you can switch Interleaving off if you wish and traffic shaping is most definitely in place though not a problem if you're on the £19.99/m package.

yeah was gonna go for the pro £19.99 option geared towards gaming etc

I wouldn't say it was geared towards gaming it just has priority over all other customers on lower packages in almost every respect.

I'm on the £19.99/m package and often download obscene amounts (usenet) overnight usually around 600 KBps.

I'm wireless at the moment so take it with a pinch of salt.

AOL is an unbundled operator in alot of areas now the standard upload rate for most operators is 448kbps, some lines such as fixed 1/2meg only have a 256 upload. ADSL2+ providers can offer upto 2.5Mbps but your line length will play a part in this. Some BT wholesale resellers (people who use BT broadband but rebadge as there own) can offer upto 768kbps, and I see this occasinaly mostly in busniness premises but occasionally with the home user. How you get your ISP to chnage your upload I have no idea. ]samknows.com is a cracking site and will tell you which operators are available in your area.
