AOL (non-LLU) customers (outside contract) information

Well if like me you're with AOL, outside of your contract and not on one of their unbundled packages (the cheaper ones), and only on 2 Mbps because of that then this might be of interest.

I've been paying £14.99 now for a year (minimum term just completed), I'm happy enough with the service.. it's only a backup line anyway. So I thought I'd phone up and see what their retention offer is for the likes of me (without AOL equipment in the exchange)... *drum roll*...

£14.99 (no change) for "up to" 8 Mbps
AOL Talk Unlimited (free)
18 month contract (broadband only, AOL Talk can be cancelled at any time)
FUP remains the same (apparently, 40-60 GB depending on who you talk to)

I'm undecided.. it's not like I've got many options as there's only one LLU provider available and I'm not even going to consider them :).

For the past year I've never had any problems downloading at circa. 230 KBps just below the theoretical maximum so I've got no complaints.

Just though I'd let you know..

I like you am outside of my contract and wanted the PS3 offer they're giving. BUT cos I'm an existing customer and wouldn't take the Talk Talk package, they would charge me £39.99 per month instead of £14.99.
I've been with AOL for 9 years and have never had any issues but so wanted the PS3 - oh well - i'd better start saving!

i went out of contract with them and i was on 2gb for £14.99
re contracted withthem for 8gb wireless with hub for £9.99 a month
if they offer any less just keep telling them you can get alot better elsewhere

Don't you just go on a month to month contract after your minimum term? If so I'd bite the bullet fot the time being and see if anyone else unbundle your exchange. Rather than sign up for a new 12 months, who's the unbundled provider in your exchange at present, Ticali or Talk Talk? Those two have the biggest LLU presence.

I'm not sure from the description whether this deal needs you to go LLU but from my experience ... DON'T!!!!!!

The CPW backbone is the most nasty, festering pile of garbage ever devised. You will tear your hair out with the constant calls to the Indian call centre. My dad has been through this and they are an absolute joke to deal with.

Stay with your current package, or move away.

That's interesting -- AOL UK use the CPW backbone, as do TalkTalk.

So why is AOL not allowing you the LLU option?

Hmmm.

AOL sold their UK operations to Carphone -- news.bbc.co.uk/1/h…stm

Since then they have merged AOL users onto their backbone -- the AOL software sets up a secure VPN between your PC and the AOL backbone in the US.

Use Firefox or IE instead, and you're communicating across CPW native.

AOL (from the CPW) only offer a line sharing service (1/2 unbundled) you pay BT for your line renta(bt provide bt dial tone), and AOL for your ADSL. Talk talk offer a fully unbundled service now in most exchnage, Talk Talk dial tone and ADSL. They are both owned by CPW but are still ran as 2 sperate ISP's. Opal Telecoms provide the backbone for Talk Talk

They say 8mbps but phonelines cant cope with more than 2mb -- thats why fibre optics are coming soon

Phonelines are cabable of for more than 2meg Dan, some ADSL2+ providers offer "upto" 24meg. Fibre is along with off for most people (not cable).
