App for transferring from one Android phone to another

Hi, should be getting the Samsung S5 in a few days, currently use a Huawei Y330 (what a jump). Is there a good free app which can transfer pretty much everything over? Neither phone will be rooted. Old phone has apps spread over internal memory and SD card. You can't just insert SD card into new phone and expect it to work as in the old phone, can you? What about using a backup app? Can that work when restoring to a different device?

Could do but I personally would reinstall apps manually so it's a nice clean start
google will sync the contacts/cal back over
All thats left is messages and the likes..
Photos and media you can copy them to a laptop/PC and then back to your phone or stick them on dropbox

If you wanted to back up the text messages etc, you can install this.

It backs up your messages to a gmail account, and can re sync them to a new phone.

ES file manager has an app backup feature so you can back up apps and data to an sd card. If you install ES onto the new phone you can then restore all the apps.

I know what you mean...but I'd prefer to take any data with the apps.

I'll have a look at the other suggestions. It surprises me how long it takes for the system builders to realise that this is a fundamental requirement for users, it should be built into the OS!

It was the same with Windows, took years for Microsoft to come up with something to help transfer from an old system.

Contacts can be synced with Google, copied to a SIM card or exported and sent over.
Text messages can be copied to a SIM or backed up using Helium.
For apps I'd recommend installing them from Google Play again, and using Helium to copy over the app data.

I've had experience using the methods mentioned above, so if you have any questions feel free to ask!

Helium looks good, might give it a go. Thanks for all the replies.

Smart Switch Mobile did it for me from S3 to S5. Don't know if it only works between Samsung phones.

Interesting...says it does on the website. Works with the existing manufacturers backup facility...will see if it recognises my Huawei then.

Wish Google had their own proper back up software which saved app data too.

I agree this feature is a big miss on android

It works amazing well with iCloud on Apple iOS. You save and restore exactly everything, all apps thier data, thier incidviual settings

This department only google is waaaaay behind

The best advice is for contacts. Google does it well in sync
Apps my advice is simply install them manual fresh

Well, S5 arrived this afternoon (The Vodafone deal ). Just tried Smart Switch and it won't transfer from an Android device - only Apple/Blackberry/Nokia.

Will have a look at Helium.

Here we go again, Helium just gives one problem after another, giving up on that.

    I use this:

    play.google.com/sto…_GB

However, my Android is rooted. I believe most functions work ok without rooting, but I have no experience of this.

Just checked, it says it does:

    - Applications (Including Data if Rooted)

I did really want data moved, but don't want to root. Will continue looking. One app in particular I wanted to move as is, is O2 Moments - new phone is locked to Vodafone (_;)

Ok, success on O2 Priority app. Used Go Backup (found from another thread on here). Relatively straightforward, although it didn't take the settings. Had to validate a new O2 sim (sending a code by text to the O2 sim in an unlocked phone).

That was the showstopper, I'll continue with the rest of my apps/settings using Go Backup and/or Astro.
