Apple cider vinegar and heartburn query?

I have a hiatus hernia and suffer from heartburn regularly.
Has anybody used Apple cider vinegar to relieve the symptoms of heartburn from this condition?
People say it works for heartburn, but there's different conditions that cause heartburn.
I'm just hoping someone who has this condition has used this stuff and can comment on its effectiveness.

I’ve not heard about it being used for heartburn but I have a shot everyday for many health benefits as well as of supposed to be a weight loss aid. It does taste awful on its own however I’ve found that the taste is much better when I mix it with fresh orange juice. I guess you could give it a go and see if it improves your symptoms.
I'm interested in this as my wife suffers from it and no matter what she tries can't control it.

Op can't give you any solutions, I do know that bread makes hers worst though.

I'm just worried it'll cripple me
You just wouldn't think anything acidic like vinegar would stop heartburn.
You'd think it'd make it worse.

Same here, bread, pastry and beer
An Omeprazole a day keeps the indigestion at bay.

Works for me anyway, I don't need to take them daily any more, just keep topped up by having one three days a week maybe, then skip a few days.

Have you got a Hiatus hernia?

No, sorry, just realised I just spouted out my favourite indigestion remedy and made the schoolboy error of not reading the OP correctly.

Yeah, it just started off with normal heartburn several years ago where I could just drink milk or take one of those over the counter remedies like Remegel or Gaviscon.
Had a camera down last year and discovered I had this Hiatus hernia.
I wake up some nights being sick and obviously my throat really suffers because of the regular burning.

Interesting, and that really isn't ideal.
They not prescribe anything or would you rather not go down that route?

I've been taking Lanzoprazole for a couple of years but it's just not doing the trick anymore.
I've heard this Apple Cider vinegar has a few health benefits, including helping with heartburn.
But like I say there seems to be different types or causes of heartburn.
Just hope someone with the same condition as me has experimented with this.

I may have to go for an operation to correct it...but surprisingly my doctor said I'd need to lose 2st before they'd consider an operation.
Yeah I'm 18st now but I just can't see me losing 2st anytime soon.
I'm just looking for a quick remedy while I try losing this 2st

Gastric Bypass by any chance?

For 2st?
I think that'd be a bit drastic tbh
I'm on 20mg omeprazole twice a day as my GERD is so bad it's like having a mini heart attack without them.
I've heard the worst side effect is it reduces the amount of iron in your body so I take a multi vitamin with iron tablet once a day, has many blood tests and my iron levels are as they should be.

However I do find that ginger root is good for settling the stomach, I buy them in capsules which makes it easier to just take a tablet when needed (or better yet once a day). But you could buy raw ginger or ginger powder and make you own drink if you prefer.
Been on Omeprazole for about 5 years now, also discovered to have a hiatus hernia after having a camera down the throat twice (the second time was horrendous)

I'm supposed to take two a day but can usually get away with taking one. Milk, rennies, gaviscon are now effectively useless and the only home remedy to relieve heartburn these days are half a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda in a tumbler of water.

Does it actually help with weight lose?

However, there is some evidence that it may have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels.

You are right to dilute it in orange juice though as drinking lots of acidic vinegar is not advised as it can be harmful for your food pipe (the oesophagus).

Let me clear up a few things here though please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Some sufferers blame heartburn on an excess of stomach acid though interestingly that's actually pretty rare.

Others claim just the opposite - that too little acid is the problem. However, very few of us have a low stomach acid, so drinking vinegar isn't really going to help.

In fact from what I have read heartburn is often caused by a faulty valve at the top of the stomach.

People should also be very cautious when taking over-the-counter indigestion remedies week after week without seeing their GP to investigate underlying causes

Prolonged exposure to stomach acid can also lead to conditions such as Barrett's Oesophagus, leading to adenocarcinoma.

However, chances of Barrett's Oesophagus developing into cancer in the short-term are actually low, but do increase according to how long it has been suffered and its severity.

Outside of cooking applications, ACV is snake oil. Don't waste your money, especially not on those dearer ones with "the mother", that's just another scam.

Saying it's snake oil is contentious even for a skeptic like myself.

Though for use for people with acid reflux it does appear that you may be right.

I would also want to see some evidence as well. Bearing in mind that it's not that difficult to find things on the internet that confirm our assumptions.

I was in the same boat as you, finally worked it out to be coffee, stopping drinking it and have stopped taking ACV and no need for Lanzoprazole, best go through all things you eat or drink on a daily basis to narrow the trigger(s) down

Had my hiatus hernia 30 years and anything acidic really does me no favours

I find it best to drink a pint of water an hour before bed and sleep on my side or back with two pillows to allow gravity to prevent reflux

Darn I forgot about coffee! After I had the camera down the throat thing the nurse said, "have you tried cutting out caffeine?"
No doctor had suggested this.
So I gave it a go, I only used to have around 2 cups of coffee a day and usually a can of coke.
Cutting those out almost instantly made a difference.
Yeah I still need the omeprazole but before cutting out caffeine they didn't work.

But you have to cut it all out, not just cut down. Only decaff tea and coffee, no coke, iron bru, lucozade, dr pepper and definetly no energy drinks!
Normal malt vinegar works, it's the only thing that would shift my heartburn. I also have a hiatus hernia. Just a spoonful of it. It counteracts the acid causing your heart burn. You could ask your doctor for lanszoprazole these work brilliant but I do still have to have a spoonful of vinegar now and again if it gets bad. I spoke to my ent specialist about this as I was worried the vinegar would cause long term damage but he said as long as I don't do it all the time it'd be fine as I don't eat or drink alot of acidic stuff in my diet. I've tried alsorts over the years from prescription to otc to natural remedies and the only thing that's ever worked is the lanszoprazole taken religiously and a spoonful of vinegar if it flares up doesn't taste great at the time but it beats suffering heartburn
