you seriously want a laptop that will cost around £1200, that has no Ethernet port, no cd/dvd drive, and only 1 usb port...?

 is this true?

unless you qualify for an educational discount the as they are new there are no deals to be had, really the macbook air is a second computer and is not recommended for someone who does not have another unit, they are great machines though

Great machines...? are you being serious, no graphics power, average cpu, not the lightest around...and all this for...£1200 it doesn't even seem to be the best ultraportable around.
It has one gimmick and one gimmick only, that it is the worlds thinnest laptop.
For the price of this you could buy a mini eepc and STILL have £1000 to spend on a pretty classy desktop, I know what i'd rather do with my money.
However, to the poster, if you happen to be an incredibly rich student, apple to offer student discounts on their website, so I suppose you'd save a little.

perfectly serious, got one from the us(£900),compliments my macbook pro perfectly, everyone to their own though it works for me,obviously won't for others

I suppose, to be honest £900 isn't that bad at all.

I wouldnt pay over a grand for one. Maybe £900 though. But to tell you the truth id get a macbook or macbook pro. The Air is slower in processor speed and less features. Although i do like how you can wirelessly connect to another computer in order to use its CD Drive

yeh that is kinda a cool feature...but tbh thats still means you NEED another computer, or a friend who will let you use theirs.
You'd think for over a grand, they would at least throw in an external dvd drive.

you can buy the purpose made one for £50,agree this should be included though

or blu-ray ..?

kippy...do you mean get an external blu-ray writer/player?

I thought about getting the AIr, but then realised, theres not much about it really apart form the touch pad and being Thin so thought its basically a gadget and would get more out of a Macbook which i want to order!!

i assume since hd's been dumped and blu-ray adopted as the next new thing, it might be worth getting ...

yeh but there's a difference between getting a standard CD-ROM drive which the mac book air lacks, for say £20-50, and getting a blur-ray player (which the mac book air would probably only just be able to run!) for around £150.

It's a cracking piece of kit but I would prefer a smaller screen version like the old Powerbook 2300c. It is very expensive and every Creative Director will be bound to have one, on expenses as well. I can understand why it doesn't have a drive but it would have made a great DVD player if it could fit in this form factor. What I really like is the new external drive - Apple please make a version of this that will work with my MacBook Pro as its a great design at a good price.

MacBook looks even better value now when compared to the Air but it's clearly targeting a different group of people with different disposable incomes.

Apple are likely to adopt blu-ray on the next generation of Macs now. They quite sensibly waited for HD-DVD ad blu-ray to battle it out and now that's sorted out its green light, particulary as they have HD screens.
