Appliance insurance advise please

Hi,

my fridge freezer is broken and I'd need some advice on what to do. Shall I repair it, repair it and cover it for 1 year, cover all my appliances or buy a new one?
I'm undecided only because it's a 3 years old A+++ fridge which still costs £500.
I think that repair & cover is better than just repair it, I've had a look at one multi appliance cover but the repair amount per claim limit is usually low (the one I saw starts from £300 per repair with the basic plan).
Has anybody had any experience with those covers?

Most fridges come with 5 years manufacturer warranty.. did you check this ?
I think no point for further insurance... just fix it.
Think about excess, many exclusions in policy..

As Mogolent said, that sort of priced fridge usually comes with a 5 year. What make and model is it?

it is a Bosch KGE36AW40G, I bought it at Coop, now I will check but I don't remember any particular warranty

Just had a read of the manual for it, says on page 22 you can do a automated self test, thats if the fride freezer is still turning on? Do you have the manual at hand? Would be worth trying and it will give you a point in the direction of the fix which you may be able to do yourself, or if not get hold of a local repair engineer to do it for you.

Its a bit hit and miss with that ruling, it might work as the appliance was brought before the change from Sales Of Goods Act 1979 to Consumer Rights Act 2015, but manufactuers dont have to honour a "good will" repair, and is alot off hassle to go through small claims to get it done if they dont. I might be wrong, you can all but try with Bosche. My friend tried with a local business and came out on top, but dont know about the likes of big companies like CO-OP.

Bosche only have a 2 year standard warranty with the chance to extend at end of period.... can I ask what has happened to the fridge freezer? Is it turning on? Is the freezer working and not the fridge, or the other way round?

I've just run the self-test and it says it's all in working order, but last time that it was on it was not cooling down at all (both the fridge and the freezer).
It just happened after I was back from the holiday, when opened the house door I heard that temperature alarm was on, so it was not been opened for a while.
Now I'm retrying to turn it on again after the test but I'm not confident

I was thinking something like that!

Engineer found the back of mine thick with ice so it wasn't cooling. He took the back off and cleared it and it's ok now. Any way you could try switching it off for a good few days for any ice buildup at the back to clear if that could be the problem.

good advice. a defrost might sort it, it does a lot of problems.

Update: I called Domestic and General to activate the repair and protect cover (so a bit more expensive than the normal cover). Finally today the engineer showed up and he found three broken components to be changed, around £600... my policy will be cancelled because it's considered beyond repaid and I will need to buy a new fridge

The engineer told me that he will call Bosch to see if they can get me a discount for a new Bosch fridge, because mine only had three years... but he is not sure they will grant the discount and honestly I'm not very determined to buy another Bosch

Sounds like a fob off to me as not enough profit in it for them. I would get a second opinion.

Did you use your credit card as there may be some cover under this. Also appliances are/were covered by "a reasonable time" that is how long should that product be expected to last however the owness is on the consumer to prove fault iirc.

No, Your contract is with the seller not manufacturer but you would most probably have to prove it had an inherent fault, May require an engineers report etc. I think it's reasonable to expect a fridge/freezer to last longer than 3 years. Truth be told that it may be easier dealing direct with Bosch as it might still have the manufacturers warranty anyway.

I've recontacted the retailer and this time they told me to send an email with all the information to the sales department. I have attached the report from the Bosch engineer too, so I hope they will do something
