Applications to Local Authorities

Anyone have any tips for local authority applications?

Bit vague I know, but I'm applying for such a position at the min and want my app to stand out!

do you mean a job application?

make sure you can demonstrate the breadth of your life experience, particularly concentrating on communication skills.

have you had any bar jobs or similar? even though such a job sounds mundane, that would go some way to demonstrating communication skills.

Yeah a job application.

I am applying for a professional position and am able to demonstrate excellent communication skills from my professional background, but I appreciate your point

Ok having worked for a local authority and had some advice from the lady in HR when applying for a promotion I can tell you this and it pretty much stands which ever job your going for.

Look at the required attributes and then in the "additional details" section make srue you document evidcence for each of the required attributes

eg:
Required Attribute: Must work well as part of a team

In "Additional Details": In previous job I had to work as part of a tightly integrated team during the development of our new policies BLAH BLAH BLAH ETC

Making sure everything is covered.

I imagine this is an application form that you fill out. I would suggest if you can filling it out by hand rather than on the PC as if they have 100 forms all filled out in type and 1 by hand it stands out instantly. A friend of mine just spent 3 months applying for jobs and hearing nothing then decided to apply in writing for 3 jobs instead and amazing heard back from all 3.

If it is to be typed, then you could always print it on coloured paper again as this makes it stand out.

Sounds silly I know, but it does help.

It's only desirable and your application cannot be overlooked if you meet all the essential criteria.

Find someway of putting the point across that you are able to adapt or use previous experiences that could be brought into a local authority environment. Depending on the type of job read up the legislations and see if you can incorporate your new found knowledge into your application.
