Arcade games (as in seaside arcades) do they still exist?

I popped into a seaside arcade over the weekend and there were only 2 arcade games in the whole place. A twin screen Batman game and a motorbike game.

I remember once upon a time that arcade games were king and console manufacturers would bend over backward to get the top arcade games ported over to their systems.

Does this no longer happen? Are arcade games a dying breed? Is there no profit in the business any more?

I may have just popped into a duff arcade but when I was younger even the duff ones had loads of arcade games to play, this one was full of slot machines and penny push style machines.

Do you think the quality of home consoles has killed off the main stream arcade business?

Are there even any new arcade machines out there that wipe the floor with the latest consoles in terms of graphical capability?

I remember everyone hanging around the pacman machine in forbuoys newsagent when I was a kid. Was 10p a go.
Neo Geo FTW
can't remember when I was last at the seaside but I do remember years ago my brother putting one of the drunken lads in a dalek that used to spin,he was puking all over the place....think that was Margate, donkeys years ago!
Street Fighter 2 onwards.
tell me they had whack-a-mole.....!
I think you've probably answered your own question, there. Today, noone wants to spend a quid a game in an arcade machine. You're absolutely right about the seaside arcades. Full of 'gambling' machines now and the true "arcade" game is an endangered species. Apart from those "dance" games and the skill type ones, of course. There's always room for those as they are more of a 'spectator' draw.

Many fond memories though of gangs of us hitting the arcades at the seaside. Seems like eons ago - and it was! Ahhh - Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Operation Thunderbolt, Afterburner - the list goes on. Great times. Trousers for goalposts - small boys in the park - falling over - grazed knees - mum'll kiss it better. Happy days...

;-)
There are some in Skegness near Butlins and few dotted about places like Drayton Manor, Alton Towers etc... Usually Tekken 3, Time Crisis and all those old one ffs!
They do. I go and play the Time Crisis 3 arcade machine every now and again

That's excellent

I'm not sure I could do it in one credit, but I remember frequently upsetting young kids with how long I could use the Time Crisis machine for. I had Time Crisis for PS1 and it was basically the same, so I knew that one really well

There's one machine in town that still takes 10ps! I know it's a fighting game, I forgot which one now though grrr. Maybe Mortal Kombat? I haven't been there in ages, inspired to go back now. Time Crisis 3 is a quid a go now!

That's right And it has these knife fingered bouncy enemies, I love shooting them:

For some reason it really makes me jump when one of them does some damage.
There is one in the basement in cex in manchester, not sure what it is though.
I used to walk home from school to save 10p to have a go of space invaders in the chippy in west gorton,i wasnt that good and rarely got onto the second level.

lmao that's just disturbing
Generally speaking the arcade machines you speak of are niche and cost too much - arcades favour fast money makers like 2p machines, and gambling machines.
The last arcade (part of haven) I was involved in, had just purchased a 'experience' machine....
£2 to sit in front of a screen, you have 4 options to pick from a rollercoaster ride to a star wars like race.... the machine itself is on pneumatics to give you the sense of movement and air and sound is played within the cabin in which you and 1 other can sit....
The machine cost £20,000, if it broke you had to call in a specialist repairer...
other than dance machines and adult 18+ bandits.... this is the only new machine which was bought in many years - and for what u get its a complete rip off....

there were a few arcades where I live but even they are disappearing. Only had cr*ppy graphics. its all gambling or kids games. there was two pinball machines left intill recently. I love to see more of them around.
Same everywhere now; used to be swarmed with some great games but nowadays you can play arcade quality on the go. Mobiles, Vita, 3DS, you never had that kind of quality when you were out and about.

A family day out to the Pier (I'm a Swansea-ite) with the arcade used to mean playing Ridge Racer, Sega Rally and 4 player Simpsons. Nowadays you can normally play them on an emulator on your phone before getting there. Not the same experience admittedly but if you can keep it for a pound forever on your phone as opposed to £1 a go on the previous one you'll likely opt for the first option.

Still the Sega Rally cabinent will be for me one of the most immense arcade games out there, utterly loved it.
