Are all oven chips rubbish?

Have tried most brands and have been disappointed by them all. Half of the chip is uncooked the other half burnt to a crisp. Fried chips may be bad for one but they taste great and cook properly 100% of the time.

McCains oven fries are probably the best.
Isnt there some way to coat them with something first that stops them from burning on the outside as fast.
Oven chips are realy nice if you deep fry them...

You can get a special oven tray that has a mesh like surface so that they don't need turning and cook throughout.

you're doin it wrong
I don't like the look of oven fried chips when i cook for the kids, so have never tried. Don't eat the fried ones that I make either, but love the takaway or burgerking ones. http://i996.photobucket.com/albums/af81/hukd_marina/smilies/happy0202.gif
My son is 11 and I have never once cooked chips for him, nor for my husband. Yeah he has had them occasionally when out and about but they are soooooooo bad for you! Oven or deep fried...........tut tut

I decided when he was very young I didnt want him getting a taste for junk food and chips were number 1 on our list to avoid - thankfully its paid off as he isnt interested in them.
Theres a 'slimming world' recipe for homemade chips-
Peel & chop spuds, parboil, drain, place on oven tray, spray with fry light, cook in oven (turning halfway!).
Nice chips with less fat!
The Harry Ramsden ones are about the best, but that's not saying much. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a good oven chip.

I like the southern fries from McCain, they get really crispy and are very tasty.
dcx_badass

That's what poundland have.

That's right. I knew I'd only paid a quid for it but I couldn't for the life of me remember where

Oven ones are pretty nasty but the thicker ones can be as little as 3-5% fat. Unless you are totally off the carbs this is hardly bad for you.
These were nice:

Yummy
mccains beer battered chips are really tasty and usually cook evenly (even if you leave and forget to turn them lol)

I like em burnt, but you can turn oven down in temp and cook for longer

There are far too many obese children who have a diet that consist of mainly KFC, MacDonalds, Burger King, Pizza and just crap.

If my son decides when he is older he is gonna start shovelling chips down - then fine, but he just hasnt a taste for them. He is hardly going to go to the chippie and ask for a bag of oven chips X)

Wow, thats actually quite mean! Ok, chips shouldnt be eaten at every opportunity, we have them once a week if that (plus we use the new tefal fryer that only uses one spoon of oil) but come on!

Mean!!X) Its mean that I give my son a healthy diet!!!!!!!!!!!! So you would say that chips should be given as a "treat" !!

No, They should be given variety.

Exactly my kids won't eat oven chips or the like as they "taste … Exactly my kids won't eat oven chips or the like as they "taste different" eg full of crap. They know chips as just potato with some spices that I use they taste so much better the natural way.If they ever go out for dinner etc, my mum took them to Pizza Hut the other day, they refused pizza and wanted salad and veg. Some kids just don't have the tase for crap and will actively choose healthy stuff, shocker I know!

Wow that is a SHOCKER Tinks X) There will be folk on here choking on their fry up reading this you know!!!!!

I just dont know why folk think taking their kids to places like MacDonalds is a "treat" - and that treat happens sooooo often!!!!

What a stupid comment you can have a varied diet without what is classed … What a stupid comment you can have a varied diet without what is classed as processed food! You'd have to force feed my kids frozen/processed food they can't stand it. As everything I do at home is fresh, it's what they are used too. They won't eat frozen chips and tbh neither will I as they are vile compared to home made chips. I couldn't cook them once a week just for "variety" yuck!

These are the best oven chips!!!
Dont make to thin, cut steak chip style.
just eat someone else`s chips.....always taste better when you haven`t cooked them yourself and you cant complain if they`re crap!
wow.......................just...................wow!!!

I actually cook/fry chips once in a blue moon, its just not the style of food we eat, i cook food from scratch (not saying to get an approval from anyone of tinternet....just saying thats all)......but.....

in school where my kids go to (private school, no packed lunch allowed) they serve chips, fish fingers and beans every friday. In the past 3 years, I haven't seen/heard ANY parent protesting "How dare you give my kid junk food?"!!!!! I wouldn't either. I am more worried about my fussy eaters especially the youngest eating any food at all!! EDIT: They serve fruit and veg too, there is even a big transparent box of variety fruits refilled everyday, in each class for kids to help themselves.

Its funny how oven chips got battered in this thread though.

Everything in moderation, balanced and sensible is key to a healthy diet imo, plateful of just salad leaves everyday can be as harmful as "junk food"

Excuse me if I have skim-read this thread wrongly, but McCains oven chips are the food of the gods, especially, IMO lathered in salt and vinegar.

How come that everyone is such a nutrition freak now-a-days??

I think that that lunatic Gillian Mc Keith - remember she used to call herself Dr until 'exposed'??_ has a great deal to answer for, as do celebrity this that and the other and all the pontificators who know sweet nothing about food, except what they have read in adverts of 'popular' mags.
Sainsburys curly fries FTW!
wow, this just turned in to mumsnet.
