im riding my push bike down the road (on the pavement) after a bit a police officer on a push bike appears and asks me to stop ! he then informs me its illegal for a push bike to be on the pavement! even though there were no people about! he warned me its a £25 fine! and he let me carry on (in the road) on my way back i see the same police man weaving between people walking along the pavement!

    They are all something....

    its the gayest rule ever!!!

you are far more likely to cause an accident riding on a busy road with fast moving traffic than on an empty pavement.

Not ALL but that one obviously was. I used to play traffic light GP with patrol cars. Never got pulled though. I suppose it depends on the mentality of your local force.

As much as I despise nulabour, you cant blame this law on them! Its been around donkeys years.

What you should've done was to catch up to the officer.. stopped him, remind him that what he was doing was illegal, take his number and tell him that you are going to report him to the local paper and his station.. You would've got a great reaction by the do gooder then.

Some Police officers think they are above the law

Not all, but I have a friend who's a cop that crashed his car while texting...didn't disclose that fact though and no one saw him, 2 days later he stopped and charged someone for texting while driving!

Try telling that to the family who lost their son when he was run over recently and killed by a cyclist riding on the pavement. In area's where people's gardens have fences / hedge rows parallel with the path, there is good reason for not riding on them. He stepped out of his garden, onto the path and was struck by the cyclist without warning.

This law falls under the Highways Act 1835 (sect 72) and the Road Safety Act 1984 (sect 129). Neither of which were written under a Labour Government.

my favourite of all time is the policeman on a horse handing out a fine to someone who's dog has s*** on the pavement whislt his horse did a s*** on the pavement

ps i don't like any animal s******* on the pavement

So he learnt from experience why texting whilst driving is considered dangerous. Good for him.

I've never met a policeman who adhered to this law. It's as if they don't know it exists!
Must just be the police around Stoke, too many other things to be occupied about ie. chavs lol

what a pathetic and pointless thread

I am a police officer in North wales, the home of Mr Richard Brunstrom......... Whilst it is an offence to cycle on a pavement (I think it is a £30, not £25, I would have to check as in 14 years I have never booked anyone for this) I think a dictate of common sense should apply from both parties. Personally, If there is no-one on the pavement and it is a busy or narrow road, I would rather you use the pavement as it is by far, safer.
However, pedestrians are regularly injured by cyclists. I know this as I deal with them regularly, but nowhere near as regular as cyclists hit by cars who tend to be hurt an awful lot more.
I wonder if it was a PCSO (police civilian support officer) who spoke to you as I would hope that response officers, like me, would rather catch criminals!!

I'm sure DC will have something to say about this....

He could have given you a fixed penalty notice instead of a warning - he might have been a dick but there are worse.

    also from north wales

personally i think Richard Brunstrom talks a lot of sense

Don't post a reply then if you think that way.....

I'd have fined you £25 for riding a bike on a pavement, then another £75 for your criminal misuse of the English language.

but thats not against the law!

If I was in America I would have sued the pavement or something.

as a serving police officer i was going to give you a sensible answer and try to build a bridge, the majority of serving officers want to catch criminals and restore law and order.. but your reply to a sensible observation shows your lack of manners and and of low interlect if you resort to swear words.. come back if you want a sensible debate when you have grown up some

On the otherhand. Yes its a pointless law, but its a law because itkeeps people safe. Like most laws we think are pointless. They wouldn't be there if the government thought that.

I cycled through a pedestrianised town centre once with no lights, a police car almost knocked me off turning into the pedestrian zone through a 'No Entry' sign, I carried on cycling got 1/4 mile down the road and 3 police cars came racing after me one mounting the curb and almost knocking me off my bike. He asked had I been drinking I said "yeah 3 pints at the pub", "where are your lights?", "in my bag" so I got them out put them on. Asked my name blah blah asked where I was going told him (it was a 12 mile ride) he thought I was joking told him I didn't want to put the lights on till I got out of the town else they wouldn't last me, he was fine with this and sent me on my way. Moral of the story, I should have got off my bike and given him a mouthful for almost killing me!

can i just say that i think it is grossly unfair and biased that this member Antj was allowed to post a comment like that without any ban or infraction put in place.
.IMO the title of this thread "are all police officers hypocrits" is a narrowminded and stereopycal view and should not have been allowed to be posted in the first place. But as I said that is my opinion.

"are all police officers hypocrits" is a question and not a statement.

Do you only want to see posts that you agree with.

Stop being silly, it was just an observation he made. It's like Police officers stopping speeders and issuing a fine but then driving off at 70mph and no they can't drive at 70mph in a 50mph without their blues on. Saying that I was doing 80 on a 60 they turned on their blues I pulled over they just kept going and then turned them off lol

I guess being a police officer is a "job". Some of the laws you might not necessarily agree with yourself and a lot of police have their own priorities, but at the same time it is a job and they have to do it...

as i said that was in my opinion. my original gripe was the language used against me

This thread is getting a bit down.
Here's a policeman joke to lighten it up a bit!

    Joke

A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a policeman. He thinks … A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a policeman. He thinks that he is smarter than the policeman because he is sure that he has a better education. He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the deputies expense.Policeman says, “License and registration, please.”Lawyer says, “What for?”Policeman says, “You didn’t come to a complete stop at the stop sign”Lawyer says, “I slowed down, and no one was coming.”Policeman says, “You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License and registration, please.”Lawyer says, “What’s the difference?”Policeman says, “The difference is you have to come to a complete stop, that’s the law. License and registration, please!”Lawyer says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I’ll give you my license and registration and you give me the ticket, if not you let me go and no ticket.”Policeman says, “Exit your vehicle, sir.”At this point, the policeman takes out his nightstick and starts beating the living daylights out of the lawyer and says “Now, do you want me to stop or just slow down?”
