Are cheap TVs a false economy?

The Tv that the kids watch is on its last legs, as is the DVD player!
I have been thinking of replacing it with a cheap TV/DVD combo and I have been searching the site for people's thoughts on what to get.

My question is that is you are not that bothered about picture quality as the kids only watch cbeebies/kids dvds, would a cheap no brand TV be a good idea, or are you always better getting something with a name and spending a few more quid....?

    any feedback would be appreciated

Most cheap stuff is a false economy.

Personally i think that so called "cheap" tv's dont look so cheap these days, there are plenty of deals on good tv's at the moment that arent going to cost you much more than your supermarket brand. Doing a bit of a search to find one might just be worth that little peace of mind its going to give you.

Dont get me wrong, the tv will be fine for the use you want.

Unfortunately, nothing seems built to last anymore, doesnt matter how much you spend.

Personally I would buy a 'combo' as if one bit stops working you are scuppered and will cost far more to repair than to replace the offending part.

Thanks everyone! I am going to have a good look around and see if I can get something a bit better, hopefully someone will post just the thing for me on the site!

You'll find the cheapies and the name brands are built in the same places by the same people.

    surely you mean wouldn't?
I agree though, buy an all in one, and if the dvd goes off then the tv has to go away for repair too, no tv.

For a kids bedrrom I don't really think theres much difference tbh.

I've got loads of TVs at home and always tend tend to update frequently and just for the sake of it. The set I can think of that replaced because it went wrong was a Sony, which most definitely wasnt a cheap set.

More often though the appearance and picture quality is what'll give the game away but not always.

Personally id avoid one with an inbuilt DVD player.

Agree with this. I bought a colour portable in the early 80's. In the early days it was on a shelving system in a bedsit. It survived a fall when the shelving came away from the wall and it is still going today. It was a real cheapy (think a contec or something) but apart from a slight problem with the on/off control switch it wont die. If you are not worried about alll the latest tweaks then nothing really to lose. Other avenues may be someone getting rid of a set on freecycle or similar forum.

Thank you everyone. I am going to stick with getting a cheap one but not a combi. At least I wont be wincing everytime they put their sticky fingers all over the screen.

    I appreciate the advice!

I think 5 years is the shelf life for plasmas and LCDs.

I got 12 years out of my old JVC CRT. It was a beast to carry out to the TV graveyard tho X)
