    Are Samsung HDD's any good?

Bought a external HDD and found out Seagate owns their HDD business. I'm not happy because I know of Seagates reputation. Is it worth keeping or has anything changed since the acquisition?

I have 2 computers running a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD and so far no issues since new. Both must be well over a 2 years old

Have one of these in my sons machine, no problems and quick, these were the first choice for gaming machines at the time

In my opinion they're great hard drives with good access times.

I always found Samsung has to have a very high failure rate. Lots of people who have only had one or two drives will swear they are the best thing since sliced bread. But from being on the repair end of things, I can tell you I would never have anything from Seagate, Samsung, or Toshiba.

The HDD maker 'X' always fails thing is a myth outside of well documented problems (e.g. the 7200.11 issues). If you look at actual numbers (e.g. Six month returns figures published by hardware.frhere) they'll generally show brands are closely grouped together.

Yet other reports show a different story.

Ah, journalistic incompetence. At least link to the original source rather than some idiot who can't tell the difference between average age and average lifespan.

I have seen that and it's interesting reading but it's questionable how well it reflects home use, they already give multiple caveats and there are unmentioned differences too.

Just saying 90% of statistics are made up.

Come to think of it I've fitted quite a few computers I've built with these drives and not one came back so far!X)
