Are the neighbours inconsiderate or am I intolerant?

So I sit here after being woken up at 3.30am for the third morning in a row. The reason being is that my next door neighbour has decided to buy a rooster.

It has been starting at between 3.30am and 4:15am every morning, and is driving me mad. My bedroom is at the back of the house, which was blissfully quiet until recently - even though I live in an urban environment on a pretty busy road.

Some people may say "oh, the sounds of the country are so beautiful...." and that may well be true, but if I wanted to hear them, I'd move to the country. I live in Birmingham for pities sake!

So do I suck it up and just try to get used to it, or take some form of action to invoke a Noise Abatement Notice? Opinions please as whilst I am extremely annoyed, my neighbours are generally quiet, respectful people.

Check if they are allowed to have them, we live in a new build house and when we bought the house in the legal papers there was all the things we couldn't do, and having chickens was one of them

Same thing happened at my mums house. She went round & spoke to them about it and they brought the rooster in the house at night!! I would just talk to them about it to start with. Or write a note if you'd feel less awkward. I would be mortified if my pet woke up all my neighbours in the middle of the night. Good luck!!

So not happy that you're being woken up by the neighbours cock every morning?

Thanks - I'll have a look, but these houses are 1930's built - doubt they would apply

Cockerel might have done the job, sort of.

I'd talk to them first before going through the more legal route or they might get their back up and make life more difficult. They maybe 'Rooster sitting' for a friend (I know, I know!(_;)). But you never know!

Good luck, I know first hand how difficult neighbours can make your life.

Thanks. No, it's not temporary. They had a guy round yesterday fitting a sort of enclosure. No sign of any chickens yet though.

Exactly

Personally, I would go straight down the legal 'noise pollution' route-or try calling the local police out while it's happening. Whether it's a rooster or a party at 3am, it's all noise. Speaking to them first might be an option if you know them really well, but I'm assuming that you'd have already done that if you were friends. Going legal may avoid any conflict, as they may not know which 'neighbour' it was who made the complaint. Otherwise invest in a super-duper pair of ear plugs and find this rooster a hen!

I'd defo try talking to them first. Are there any neighbours on the other side? Maybe you could see if its bothering them too and go together? x

make a hole in the enclosure so it can escape

I'd be going down the route of talking to them politely first, to see if there is some way to sort this out amicably.

If not, crack on with the legal route.

Get a pet fox.

Yep, just Google noise pollution.

Oh, and tell them deeky says to tell them they're inconsiderate scumbags.

The next problem will be rats or mice, they unfortunately usually use chicken runs as a free food centre

Oh my I feel sorry for you! How selfish, why in earth do they need a rooster?! I get annoyed by my next door neighbours child screaming and shouting in the hallway between 7am and 9am lol but I don't think I'd be able to cope with a rooster waking me up at 3.30am! I hope you get it sorted!

My neighbour got chickens but they only stayed a few weeks. The cockerel made a right racket and I guess they worked it out for themselves and got rid of it. However, if this goes on I would go to the noise people at the council, I doubt yours will be the only complaint.

Don't even get into it with your neighbour.

Just complain to the council.

Speak to your neighbours first before any legal action.

some neighbours are really into the kinky stuff eh ?

If you think it is annoying you, just think how much it must be annoying the idiots who got the thing!

You don't happen to live in South Brum do you as there is one about 15 doors down the road from me and yes, they do start making noise about that time here too.

Search fox goes floof on youtube, that should keep them in check.

I still don't get how people living in the middle of an urban area can get away with doing this, you really shouldnt have to 'get stuck in' with the neighbours and local councils should have some process in place to stop this from even being possible.

I'd talk to them first but, as far as I'm aware if they are in an urban environment then they have to be decrowed or whatever it's called. Someone who lived in the same street as my partners mum had a cockerel and I recall that being the situation as it was an urban environment.

When we had chooks we had no rodent problems but that was down to good food management and a special feeder what the birds have to step on to open, rodents aren't heavy enough to trigger the door.

People in this country often make the mistake of thinking 'this is a free country I can do what I like'. This is not right, you have rights and you have responsibilties.

Call the local authority to report the noise nuisance or buy an air gun and shoot it. You are entitled to sleep.

My sympathy is with you though.

So you would shoot an innocent animal that is just doing what it does naturally? The fault is with an irresponsible owner not the animal. You sir a scum of the lowest order if you think this is the correct way to deal with it. Do you kick puppies for fun too?

Under the allotments act 1950 it allows just about anyone with a garden to keep chooks, even a covenant on a new build is generally unenforceable due to the allotments act as its a point of legal law, whereas the covenant is more of a civil matter.

The issue is not due to keeping chickens its due to an irresponsible owner having a cockerel in a built up area.

Nothing to do with allotments as it's in his neighbours garden and that chicken you ate for Sunday lunch was innocent too. As to kicking puppies no I don't but you weren't being serious no one is that stupid.
