I'm talking good sound, excellent screen and usability. Don't like the HP Envy range because I need a CD/DVD drive, anyone have any ideas?

Alienware just as good if not better.

Have you not considered to just get an Envy and an external writer?

I've been looking for a 13 inch and I seen these ones that are slim and just as portable as the macbook and all have an intel i3 processor in them & all have dvd rewriter drives.
Samsung Q330
Toshiba R360
Toshiba R700
I think that they are all 13.3 Inch. I want to get one but want to spend below £500 for something like this. If anyone knows any good deals on these laptops let me know.

Something I will say on that is the Q330 would probably be the better laptop, I love the samsung machines, and the bloatware is not as bad as some others, especially Toshiba.

I have an ASUS now that I am trying, something a little bit better again and am having a nightmare getting rid of all the bloatware on it!! Shocking amount.

Big issue is I have a mac at the moment and I find it so easy to do loads of stuff, but the amount of software I have to buy is unreal and I dont wanna spend loads on it. TBH.COM

Urrr, HP Envy's DO have inbuilt Disc Drives -.-

More specifically the HP Envy 14 & Envy 17 Line.

CES is also around the corner, the new sandy bridge models are being introduced so I'd say wait if you can.

Have considered this, but I find the trackpad does not work as it should in Windows, its something Apple have not sorted out properly for a long long time.

I am looking forward to the Mac App Store, it is going to open things right up I think. Not gonna sell my mac until I have seen what that thing does!!

I'm sure I can manage to find a slow, overpriced and out of date laptop … I'm sure I can manage to find a slow, overpriced and out of date laptop for you if you really want.

Lol I am sure you can, just want it to be sleek and stylish like a mac!

Which happens to be slow, overpriced and out of date.

oooh to be honest I beg to differ there, my mbp is as quick as any i5 laptop.

The speakers are poor so cancel that out.

I like the speakers on the mbp, pretty much the best laptop speakers I have experienced anyways.

You really a dullard, banging this point home every thread.

We did a test at work on an i3 iMac (lowest spec) against an i7 PC running win7. From cold boot we raced to see who could get it started, logged in, email sent with photo attachment taken from USB drive and logged on to Facebook. Guess which won?

Never underestimate the synergy of purpose built hardware and software and the value an individual would place on that.

A macbook is hardly purpose built hardware though is it. These days they are just a PC in an apple designed case. They use the same hardward pretty much as a regular windows laptop, just generally a fair few months behind the technology curve.

Software is built for the hardware, there's a limited amount of Mac hardware builds for that reason hence the hardware is purpose built.

I've tried explaining this to him before, but it's a waste.

To me the value in it is the fact that it just gets out of the way and allows me to work quickly. Booting up, waking up from sleep, no anti-virus to worry about and the myriad of other little things just make it a joy to use.

Surely by that analogy the software is purpose built. They do after all run on intel processors like 80%+ of the rest of the laptops in the world. There isn't any real technological difference between what is in a Mac and what is in a Windows PC. I'm not saying that Mac's are poo..... just saying that they are just a regular laptop in a nice case running an Apple OS.

The software is what underpins a Mac being a Mac, not the hardware anymore.

Yes they use standard components, not arguing that, it wasn't my point. Hardware is purpose built for the OS just as the OS is written for the hardware. My original point was therefore valid, not sure why you picked up on it.

We shall have to agree to disagree as I don't think we are getting anywhere!!!

Booting up - my laptop seems to manage that well
Waking up from sleep - laptop seem to do that immediately too
Anti-virus - ah you got me I often wake up in a cold sweat worrying about my automatically updating, low resource using anti-virus which has kept my laptop virus free for three years.

I think little comes close to a Macbook in terms of looks - I do think Apple do that brilliantly. But some of the arguments used such as the above seem nonsensical. At the end of the day if they were the same price as the equivalent laptop I would definitely get one to try out for a bit longer, but having mucked about on plenty I fail to see why I should pay such an excess. But each to their own it would be a sad world if we all liked the same things

Did you end up finding anything then?

Too bad they look like crap.

Depends why you need a mac, if you do loads of video editing its perfect. A macbook pro coupled with 16GB of ram render a full 50GB video in 30mins.

broadcast quality (1080i)

Also if you are putting the size of a video and not the length/resolution/bitrate, then it's pretty clear you don't know what you are talking about. You don't render a 50GB video.
