Are there phones that don't overheat?

Posted 6th Jul 2021
I'm honestly just curious just because I'm looking for a new phone at this point. I do game on my phone occasionally, but all the phones I've tried overheat (especially my Xperia 5) causing it to run slow and sluggish.

Does anyone happen to have a list of phones that don't overheat while watching videos, gaming, etc?

You may have too many apps open, maybe turn down some settings like brightness and make sure the software is up to date.

Usually all phones can get hot from time to time which depends on your usage and settings.

I've a oneplus 7t and previously a 5t. My old pixel phones would warm up during charging but the oneplus never do. The warp charger block would get warm. Though both had bad battery health after just over a year. My 7t is 1yr old and and it's battery health/capacity is now 86%. It shows as I have to charge during the day now so it doesn't die on me by 8pm. (edited)

I wouldn't expect any phone to thermally throttle on video, unless you were playing an obscure format it didn't have dedicated playback hardware for. It's just not a processor intensive use.

Gaming and other sustained high demand uses will likely cause various amounts of thermal throttling but I'd expect most phones to be designed that way so they can deliver better performance for burst workloads (most things) than would otherwise be possible in a device of that size.

If performance is dropping right down or staying down for significant amounts of time after you quit the game then I wonder if it's something like the style of phone case you prefer. Do you see the same behaviour if you take the phone out of the case and use it?

My phone (Oppo Reno Z) and my previous phone (Galaxy S7) would only get hot when I left google maps or waze on.

So I assume something to do with the GPS causes it to heat up, perhaps try turning GPS off and see if it makes any difference.

I'm not sure if it is apps, I always close all my apps when it's running sluggish or even if there's too much open. Software is well up to date, brightness is on adaptive mode and since I'm indoors it's never too bright. I think it's just my phone. I have the Xperia 5 and it gets HOT even through watching some videos, especially gaming

I think it's primarily while I'm on a video call or gaming. I took off my phone case one time while gaming, but didn't find it to be very helpful at the time
