I have had a Carrera Vulcan mountain bike for over a year and love it, never had a problem with it.

Carrera bikes are well made and are a great buy at around £300 for most of their models.

Thanks NEtech. I hope you don't mind me asking: how much was your Vulcan? Just a ballpark figure would be a helpful indicator. And did you buy it in a sale, or at RRP?

I got it second hand for £110, but it was basically brand new. I think the Vulcan normally sells for around £360 ish. Mine was the older blue and white version.

id say compare the prices with other online cycle stores before making the purchase I.e Evans, wheelies, tredz etc. as halfords aren't always the cheapest and of course check for discount codes. good luck!

Halfords own most if not all of the bike brands they sell, the sale price is usually what the bike is worth to start with

I've never owned one personally but have heard that carrera are generally not that good and the rrps are a joke!

Should be OK with that kind of heritage.(_;)

Have they actually been reduced? £279 for the carrera-crixus is more expensive than it was a month ago.

I imagine it's the same for the others too. Whilst none of us have got time machines, it does show that the 'sale' isn't much of a sale, there's no rush to buy.

Thanks for your thoughts zaid89. Would you consider buying one at these reduced prices, or would you still be put off by what you've heard about them?

Maybe I set my expectations a little high looking for a god quality bike! I'll settle for good quality. Thanks for spotting the typo.

Stick with Giant, Specialized, Trek, Cannondale and the like.

Don't forget to get your office walla bike lycra, it will make you go faster on any bike, plus you will look very cool as you turn up to work.

Agree with DistortedVision - stick with better makes as Carrera are rubbish quality.

Thanks roof30. Can you suggest any more brands other than the ones DistortedVision has already?

Honestly mate, there is nothing wrong with Carrera. For those who are saying they are rubbish quality are talking nonsense.

For under £300 for most of their bikes you can get some very good deals with some good spec. The Vulcan I ride was voted the best mountain bike you could get for under £500 just a few years ago by one of the top mountain biking magazines and it only cost £369 new, so it was up against £500 bikes and still came out on top.

The build quality is good, the parts are good and these are as good as most top names brands in the this price range. Just take a look at how hot some of the Carrera deals have got on here over the last year, that is because they are very good for little money.

Obviously do some research and try to get the best price possible, but do not let other people put you off buying a Carrera.

I am not say go out and just buy a Carrera because of course there are other options, Giant, Specialised, GT, etc. But take a look at them all, narrow it down to what you like and then ask on here.

OP, what are you going to be using the bike for? Commuting on roads? Commuting on canal paths? Off-roading? Mountain biking?

The starting point before buying/recommending any bike should be to establish the usage.

Scott perhaps. But that pretty much covers most of the market. What is your budget?

If you look here at Evans Cycles:

http://www.evanscycles.com/help/price-match

These are the major retailers. It would be a good place to start. The main ones are Evans, Tredz, Chain Reaction and Rutland.
I've bought several times from all of them.

Also your local bike shop but the ones nearest to me only stock 2-3 brands and have limited models on display.
