ARE YOU BEING CHARGED FOR WATER THAT IS NOT BEING RETURNED ?

Just compared my bill with someone Else's. Noticed a couple of things. We are both on water meters. However the thing that struck me was. That if i have soakaways for my downpipes and i am doing a lot gardening which is using water. Then why i am paying for water that is not going back to be cleaned by my water company ? Example if i use 300 units of water. The water company will not charge for the first 5% but will then charge for the privilege of taking back the rest of the 95% of the waste water. Even though i am using a fair bit for gardening. This 95% does not work out. Does this make sense or am i just thinking wrong ?

Why are you paying for water that is not going to go back to the water company?

Because it costs money to get that clean water to you.

That is what we pay for receiving the water. The company also charge double for taking it back to process.

I can assume you must be at least a family of 4 to benefit from being on rates rather than a meter.

doesn't matter what size your family, the cost to you if a pipe breaks if your on a meter is way more than you save, because they charge it as water usage

How often will that happen? Maybe one in 10,000 people? I have no idea to be honest, just guessing but I know for sure the amount you save on a water meter will outweigh the odds of getting a burst pipe leading to your property.

Single people or couples are stupid not to get a water meter fitted, the savings are vast.

The water company are only going to know the amount of water going in to a property and not how much comes back again. How are they supoosed to know what it is being used on?

Exactly. If they can measure water going in surely it ca be done the other way around ? Like in spring.summer water is used alot in our gardens. Like for filling pools watering plants etc. This water is never collected by the water companies so in theory should not be charged as going back to them for treatment. If they harvest it is another thing. Its a similar thing to council tax where you can appeal on your house value etc. Just like the banking charges scam. People thought nothing could be done but in the end we had arysh and so on. Its the way people think. Think of it this way. For every 1 unit of water you use you pay £1.50 . For evey 1 unit of water that goes back to the water company you pay £2.50 so £4 per unit. does this make sense if you are using it in your garden ?

Agree with the OP, its a scam. Unfortunately, even though water is privatized you have no choice whatsoever who supplies you so they've got you by the balls.....

Yes i dont pay surface water drainage because water from my property does not enter the sewers. Then why pay for water when it is being used for gardening as it is still not entering the public sewers of water company sewers ?

you need to phone them and explain that its goes in to a soak away as that is what we done and they reduced our bills. we didnt know about the front soak away until we had a blockage and the workman said in our street it just goes into a soak away and not back in to any drain. Our rear down pipe also goes into a soak away that we done ourselves after extension was built

I don't think that's right, we are a family of 4 and payed £60 per month before we went to a meter our bill is now £22 a month.

Also, the Water companies are the only business that do not have to prove how much you are actually using / wasting. They can just charge you and you have to pay no matter what!

my point is, that water companies, work out how much you are using, then how much you are wasting as a percentage of what you have used, whether you have wasted that much or not, you cannot debate it, question it, ask them to prove what you have wasted in terms of a figurable amount, they just say they dont have to quantify it, we charge on those basis's and you have to pay.

so does the TV licence, they assume you have it on 24/7 then charge a flat fee.

They don't assume anything of the sort, it's more like a flat fee for turning a TV on even for a second and then you get the subsequent year's use for free.

Have them switch off your water supply then you wont have to pay anything.

i dont pay water charges so dunno but...

how do you know all the water you stick in your garden doesn't go down the drains? ofc it will at some point whether its seepage from your land or evaporation/transpiration rain etc

do they charge you extra when it rains?

    Original Poster

No they only charge you if your down pipes are connected to the public sewer or water runs off your property in to public sewers. Rain is not chargeable. I have down pipes which go into soak aways.

    That's big of 'em.

If you are on a water meter and you have a burst pipe, you can possible claim back a refund.

I wonder if the point is being missed here.

If you have a soakaway, let the water company know and they will lower your bill. I thought this was common knowledge.

Apologies if I came across as being sharp. I was just trying to be helpful.

I don't know the answer to your question unfortunately.
What I do know is what I stated in my initial reply, if you have a soakaway (most modern houses do), inform your water company and they will reduce your waste water charge. You should be able to claim a rebate for past years too.

    not /thread at all.

there are 2 separate charges on your bill; 1 for water supply, one for disposal. they estimate that 95% of the water that goes into your house will be returned to the sewer as you are likely to use 5% through drinking, watering plants, evaporation from drying clothes, etc. additional surface (rain) water charges are also made.

if it was 100% (i.e. what you are saying) you would have a single combined charge.

The surface water amount can be reduced by having a soakaway or even water butts; contact your water company and reach an agreement on a reduction. I've not had a problem doing this.
