After exercise a child will have a pulse rate of about 210 beats per minute. An adult's is nearer 190 b.p.m. To estimate maximum pulse rate calculate 220 minus age (in years)

In a marathon, a 32 year old woman runs with maximum effort for 25 minutes. What would her pulse rate be?

Another runner runs the same distance, again with maximum effort, but takes 30 minutes. During that time her heart beats 5730 times. How old is she?

you sure hes not doing A level?

I wish, I wouldn't feel as dense then :oops::-D

I'm guessing that you meant:-

220 minus age in years...

To estimate maximum pulse rate calculate 22 - age (in years)

So my maximum pulse rate is -17? That doesn't sound right.

what!

Sorry 220, can't even get that bit right!!

188/29? It's only an estimate after all

The first one is 188....

2nd one is simply 5730 divided by 30, which will give 191 bpm (therefore 29)

How about...

1) 220 - 32 = 188 pulse rate

2) 220 * 3 = 660 5730 / 10 = 573

660 - 573 = 87

87 / 3 = 29 years old

OP do u feel your son gets too much homework for a ten year old? My son is also ten and I am so sick of the amount of homework he gets. Its at least an hours worth every night - and fitting that into taking him to his clubs etc its a nightmare.

Sometimes am stuck as well when doing it!

edit - last nights maths took us nearly two hours - I was fuming by end of it !

A bit overcomplicated. Beats/Minutes then 220-The answer as in Q1

Can you explain the rationale behind the workings? Don't understand why you did what you did!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Makes sense.

i did it by 5730/10 = 573 573/3 = 191

220 - 191 = 29

quite tricky to do in my head tho

2. 220 - (5730/30) = 220 - 191 = 29

Will check above when I've posted!
