What's going wrong at Argos, tried to order a macbook, found one for delivery and later got an email saying it was out of stock, they had taken the money and it seems as though it's going to take up to 7 days for the money to be refunded.

Pretty normal SNAFU for Argos.

Taking money for products you don't have in stock is illegal. But your money should be back before the complaint gets anywhere unless you are prepared to invest time and effort.

There may be a better way for quicker return of funds; Hopefully you put this on a credit card (assuming its between £100 and £30,000 in value) and have secured your rights to hold the credit card company jointly liable. Under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, the credit card company is jointly and severally liable for any breach of contract or misrepresentation by the retailer or trader.

Contact the card issuer and send them the confirmation that money has been taken illegally and do they wish to feature in a complaint now you have notified them. Make clear you are taking contemporaneous notes (ie real time jottings) of the conversation and will forward this to the Financial Conduct Authority.

To be utterly candid; if a shopper buys something, be it goods or services from a retailer (PC/holiday/car under £30k/Service plan etc) and does not put the first £101 pounds on a credit card, they are missing a golden piece of protection.

Or are incredibly thick to be really candid. The protection has been around since 1974. That's 43 years.
Had the same happen with Game a few months ago
