    Argos Clearance Warranty Warning

    I bought an MSI Wind U130 Netbook last September.
    Shortly afterwards I installed a RAM upgrade chip to improve the speed of the machine.
    I checked with the manufacturer (MSI) about the upgrade as you have to break the warranty seal to get into the machine. They said that it was fine to upgrade the RAM as long as no other damage was done and it would not invalidate the Warranty.
    Everything was fine with it and I was very pleased with the netbook.
    Last week a fault occurred with the display.
    With Argos clearance laptop returns are with d&j Henry. When I phoned them to arrange a repair I asked them if I should remove the extra Ram chip before I sent it back, and they said as I had broken the warranty label the warranty was now invalid! They would not budge even though I told the them manufacturer had OK'd the upgrade.
    I phoned argos clearance about it and they said the warranty was voided also.
    So buyer beware don't open the back to upgrade or the warranty is voided.

    was there even a sticker there ???

    I read a thread somewhere that if you upgarde your ram and ring MSI they will send you a new warranty sticker.......if you manage to get one - remove your extra memory, put the new sticker on and send it off for repair.

    Installing a RAM chip should not void warranty unless the fault was from user error which in this case it isn't.

    I would contact trading standards about it. If you are sure you did not break the warranty sticker then stick to ya guns about it. Warranty sticker wouldn't be over the trap door to access RAM normally.

    Seeing the post above if that is the case contact MSI explaining what has happened and see what they say.

    Breaking the seal on the warranty labels doesn't not invalidate your statutory rights.

    Its a bit old and might not reflect the current situation but it looks like you should notify MSI before and after the upgrade to get the sticker

    Thanks for all the replies guys.
    To open the case you have to go through the warranty sticker to remove a screw.
    I also read MSI will send a new sticker but the email reply I got said they do not have any to send !
    I am contacting trading standards but I can see hours of aggravation ahead.

    As stated above on the MSI website they have the following message :-

    If you have purchased your MSI unit from Argos you will need to contact Argos support as MSI does not provide any direct service for such units. The warranty, technical support and service for these products are handled by Argos directly.

    Your contract was with Argos, not MSI, so that's who you should have contacted before the upgrade.

    Anyway, do what gavj suggested and see if MSI will sort it out. It's often easier dealing with the manufacturer as the retailers often have no idea what they're talking about.

    I have sent a begging email to MSI try and get a replacement sticker.

    Just thought I would warn everyone about this problem as I know a lot of these netbooks have been bought by hotukers ( is that the right terminology )
