    ASUS Eee £100 Laptop?

OK, so this isnt out yet, but when it does HUKD, and probably the rest of the web itself will come to a grinding halt.

If you don't know what it is it is a cheap and cheerful £100 laptop from ASUS running a proprietary version of Linux. Specs are 900MHZ Mobile Pentium CPU, 512MB RAM, 8GB Flash memory, 7" screen, aswell as VGA out, 3x USB, WiFi (g) etc.... Not going to blow you away, but for web browsing, checking email etc.. ive simply gotta have one.

Simply, as demand will be huge, does anyone know where i can get my hands on a pre-order please?

    Many TIA.

    Hi Foxy,

Yeah i dont want an expensive laptop as i cant justify the expense, and if i could i would be too scared to take it out of my house anyway. You can read more about i on ]Wikipedia.

I'm hoping it does sell for around £100, i cant see it selling for allot more than that tbh, the masses would probably just buy a Celeron lappy instead.

On an unrelated note, hows the Picoo Z thing going?

looks like it to me but it looks nicer than the other attempts that have been predicted so far..but to be honest id rather pay a bit more and get a refurb or a celeron with a real operating system.

Yeah, its basically the same thing but for the mass market. I don't like seeing Celerons running Windows, they cant do it. I would rather have this running Xandros Linux as shown above.

They are sending me a new one...result. I see they are mucking you around because of company bureacracy. Let me know how you get on. Hope they send you the right one.

You should stop posting items, you make me too tempted! This laptop sounds like sonething that would be right up my street. Nice one

lol-i will, don't buy one of these, i partially feel responsible for your broken Picoo Z. Lucky yours is being sorted.

Why has the keyboard on the laptop got a windows logo, when its running Linux?

    Original Poster

You know BadBoy, i was wondering that myself. Must be just to keep the average XP user happy is all i can think, unless its just because thats a prototype model and they havent decided what icon to use.

Keyboard taken off another model to reduce unit price?

Yes ad, that sounds reasonable too.

    I'd buy one, Very cheap!!!!

Take a look at the PC world website!

They are offering a free laptop worth £300 when you subscribe to Orange broadband for 2 years @ £14.99 a month

On computeractives website it says it'll be £199 in the uk

LOL! Celerons can't run windows! What a truly ridiculous statement!

Do you also believe single core processors can't run Windows, now that we have dual, quad and even 8 core processors?

Celerons are less powerful than their higher priced brothers, but they're still perfectly capable of running windows, and everything else for that matter.

OK, so maybe i exagerrated that a bit, yes, Celerons *can* run Windows, but they have an insanely small amount of L1 and L2 cache and a very slow FSB. They are aimed at users who just want to surf the web/check email, but i find them too slow to do that to be honest. If you have one and its great then good, but i wouldn't touch one to be honest.

I have been with Orange for 8 months now, and cannot wait until the 12 month contract is over so I can cancel. It truly is the worst ISP and mobile phone provider I had ever had the misfortune to use.

You may get a free laptop, but you will regret every moment of the 24 months contract that you are with them.

Things can only get better, if we show via consumer power that they need to sort themselves out, rather than keep offering these carrot on a stick enticements to get us to sign up.

That's not the point though. You made an utterly false statement which could mislead people. I'm running a Celeron now and my computer runs perfectly. I haven't tried new games as I'm not a big PC gamer, but anything I do play works perfectly.

Of course they're slower than more expensive processors, but please don't suggest they're not capable of running Windows, or even being a decent processor, because they are.

OK OK, i concur, i dont want to get into an argument and upset everybody. Personally, i dont like Celerons and find them to be slow, thats just my opinion. I said "they cant run Windows", obviously this isnt true as retailers wouldnt be selling them, it was just a sarcastic exaggeration. Like i said, if you've got one and its working then good.

    Just chill.
