Asus Eee PC 900 or the Advent 4211

I am thiking of exchanging my laptop for an eee PC.

The reason for this is smaller and more mobile.

Would the asus be able to play a film from and SD card/ or hard drive?

and would i be able to download music at the same speed as i would on my desktop?

I don't personaly have one, but i have tried ubuntu on my pc, it was pretty cool, it automatically went onto internet to get codec to play avi files.

I'm guessing you're not getting the xp version?

yes i probably would get the PC version, just wondering if the screen, graphics etc. would cope with a movie.

also does anyone know what is the sound quality like?

most people say the eeePC copes well with divx and mp4 files, I doubt sound quality is that good, I would recommend headphones

it will do everything that pc will do.

I recommend the linux version as its more responsive with the hardware and is very simple to use. Plenty of forums should you wish to do something that isnt obvious. also cheaper.

Plays all films that vlc player plays fine e.g everything.

plug any headphones in to improve sound quality, has a 3.5mm jack.

Also it looks f****** cool. The only problem you may have is the small pixel size which reduces the viewable area, but then again thats why its so small.

    good luck

If you are running film of an sd card you may want to re-encode them with pocket divx encoder. You can resize them so they fill the screen, getting rid of the black bars top and bottom. It will also reduce the size, so you can get more films on the card (does reduce the quality). Play about with the settings to get to what you like. Encoding with a good desktop pc doesn't take that long. It will encode happily in the background. For playback use The core pocket media player (Windows Desktop version) as this uses very little system resource which makes the battery last longer (also remember to turn off the wi-fi to save energy)

One thing about Linux is that it is NOT windows (obviously), you have to do some coding yourself just to install stuff, some of the real basics are done for you, but when you get installatoin packages to have to make it work for your specific machine.

I think had Linux gone for a proper GUI just when Microsoft messed up with an OS (Vista) they could have penetarted the market........

Windows 2000 & XP are without doubt extremely popular O/S, with the Vista b***s up people just reverted.. myself included.

Convert your movies to 700mb-1gb xvid files. Or, if you like all the DVD extras, DVDShrink will get them down to 3-4gb (or less with some work)

I have been looking at getting one and found them as a free gift with a mobile contract

LOL, wanted to know this too. Also, the new Asus EEE 901, would it be able to have programs such as VLC media player, WINRAR, iTunes?

The new one comes with a 20g hardrive too.

Yes but most likely you'd have to install the equivalent software yourself.

All EEEs are capable of running those programs but performance will be poor to average depending on what model you go for.

The 900 Linux variant is 20GB but it's really two drives, a fast 4GB SSD and a slower 16GB SSD.

All the newer netbooks use the same Atom CPU so make of that what you will, the 700/701 and 900 use a Celeron 900 MHz CPU with the former underclocked to 630 MHz.

So, is the Asus EEE Pc 901, better than the previous models and worth the extra money in terms of speed and not hardrive space?

The 901 is meant to be the best 8.9" model Asus have built so far.

It's meant to have superior battery life, bluetooth built in, 802.11n wireless, I'm not sure about the CPU... in terms of speed.

Put simply if you have the cash you're better off with the 901 if you want an EEE with a 8.9" screen, without even considering the competition. There is a 10" EEE in the works with similar specs, with the option of a normal 2.5" drive instead.

The 900 should be on sale shortly for about £225, the 901 can be had for somewhere between £290 - £320 depending on the retailer.

I know you probably don't have one, but would it be recommended, or are there any other laptops out there around the same size, and similar specs? Was looking at teh Sony VGNs in particular. Thanks for the help so far. Rep given!

I don't have a 901 so I can't recommend it yet :). The 900 has issues - the most common being small batteries being shipped to the UK (4400 mAH) and discharging whilst it's off.

The MSI Wind and the Acer Aspire One are the main EEE competition in the same price range at the moment though none of the three are readily available here in the UK yet. More coming out in the next few months though you can be sure of that.

    I thought that too :-D.

Asus are shipping a revised 900, without the fast 4GB SSD making it slightly cheaper. From what I've read it's relatively slow compared to the regular model.

901 all day long, if you can find one in stock!

should only be about 30 gbp more than the 900, check oyyy.co.uk for some of the best prices ive found

but much better battery life, and i think thats a key issue if using it out and about.

waiting for the 20gb linux ones to appear then im getting one, poss dual boot with xp on it aswell as ubuntu
