    Asus X205T (Win 8.1, 32GB SSD) advice on what virus scanning software to use?

    Just bought my son a Asus X205T running Win 8.1. It has a 32GB SSD so space is a premium, can anyone recommend what virus scanning software to use? Thanks.

    Windows 8.1 has virus scanning software built in.
    Just check windows defender in the control panel.

    Thanks nacho99, we'll do that

    I find defender not good enough. I use free avast on top. Download it on filehippo. Never had a problem, great and lightweight.

    I recommend this also - Lightweight compared to many of the third party ones, and doesn't slow your machine down as much. Although Avast is a very good free alternative which rates highly.

    Thanks for your advice everyone. I think we'll start with WD.

    Interesting article comparing WD and Avast. Love the line;
    "an added ounce of protection (which, as you know, is worth a pound of cure)."

    it will totally depend on what you use the system for and where you go on the web. Kaspersky is by far the best there is regardless of what other say. The free Windows defender will not protect you from most dodgy websites. Kaspersky has sandbox banking support so it puts you banking logins in a protected window so even if your system is infected, it will protect you. I have tried them all and Kaspersky internet Security is the best. If you bank with Barclays then Kaspersky is totally free. Just login to Barclays online banking and click on the Kaspersky link on bottom left of front page (Barclays can't be wrong either)

    Its not really a good idea advising someone to use the free stuff. Free almost always means fairly average at best. I worked in PC World for 8 years for my sins and during that time as a technician scanning and fixing thousands of systems Kaspersky was and still is the best and Software like Windows Defender, AVG, Norton, Mcafee all failed and systems were still infected but Kaspersky never had a hint of infections when scanned with other software's and manual scanning methods. Sorry.

    I also find the P2P downloaded ones sometimes include viruses and spyware (since you cant trust the source). There are some bad advice on here, my advice is to not ask people on here as most are not experienced in this sort of thing. I would like anyone to prove me wrong in the interest of helping this user.
