It will have a dramatic effect on the power consumption of the global mobile industry. Universal Charging Solution (UCS) – the creation of a single, energy-efficient one-charger-fits-all new mobile phones solution – will result in a 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption, elimination of 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers1 and a subsequent reduction of 13.6 million tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions each year. Universal charger will also make life much simpler for the consumer, who will be able to use the same charger for future handsets, as well as being able to charge their mobile phone anywhere from any available charger. By 2012, the group is targeting the majority of new mobile phone models to support Micro USB as the universal charging interface and meet the high efficiency targets set out by Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP). The initial group of companies who have joined the GSMA’s UCS initiative include 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone. European Commissioner for Industry, Günter Verheugen, recently stated in an interview with German broadcaster Deutsche Welle that the European Commission planned to force mobile phone manufacturers to manufacture one mobile phone charger for all mobile phones.1 GSMA analysis from UNEP, Gartner, European Commission Integrated Product Policy Pilot on Mobile Phones, University of Southern Queensland data.- An estimated 1.2 billion mobile phones were sold in 2008, of which between 50-80 per cent were replacement handsets. That equals between 51,000 and 82,000 tonnes of replacement chargers every year.

Because back then, you could charge £20 for a charger. As time's gone on though, phones have become more computer oriented, and with picture and music playing abilities, they need USB hookups anyway. When they're connecting by USB it annoys people that they can't also charge by USB as every other rechargable device worth its salt has been doing since more or less the dawn of time, so they're pretty much being forced into it.

Notice though, they're still going to sting you with MicroUSB connectors, rather than MiniUSB, which is the type that every other electronic device uses.
