I'm in Turkey right now and have a query regarding ATM fees when withdrawing cash. I did my research before i went out and ensured that i should withdraw cash at the ATM in local currency and also reject the DCC option for the ATM to convert. I also use Starling who dont charge a fee.
Question i have is - everytime i attempt to withdraw and reject DCC- I still get hit with an approx 5-7% charge for using the ATM. Ive tried multiple ATMs ans they are all pretty much the same. 2000 TL costs me around 130-150 TL to withdraw.
See attached pics of one of the ATMs.
Ive seen posts who have claimed they don't get charged anything. Am i doing something wrong?

Those are suggestions on TripAdvisor for no fees but can't confirm as not been to Turkey to myself.
According to my tests 25.3.2022 the following banks do not charge any fees:
Ziraat Bankası
HalkBank
ING Bank
Şekerbank
Fibabanka
Ptt Bank
The following banks do charge fees: !!!! (most of them around 6%)
VakifBank
QNB Finansbank
Bankamatik
Denizbank
TEB
YapiKredi
AKBANK
Garanti
Yeah, this is right.
For your particular country, you need to look at what ATM's do not charge a fee.
Similarly in the U.K., some ATMs charge a fee for withdrawal - this is the same. Usually some banks will charge for their ATMs, some will not.
You simply need to find the ones that don't charge (If any - country specific...) - usually via a Google search for your area/country. (edited)
I have a friend in Turkey and he says some banks even charge to display your balance, so I would say yes, it's normal. Last time I went I made it my mission to find ATMs that did not charge. They are rare, but they do exist.
If you see this transaction, I got charge 69 lira to cash out 1000 lira.
Then I used the Ziraat Bankasi and it didn't charge any fees I cashed out 500 lira each time. I also declined the DCC and that's what happen, I didn't find a HSBC in Antalya but the Ziraat Bankasi for sure worked without fees. What if cashing out over a certain amount charges fees regardless? I didn't check for that.
Ok good spot. I'll try this next time and see how i get on. The only withdrawals I've made have been for 2000 TL. Thanks bro
Can confirm that i tried ING ATM but a lower amount (500 TL) and i didn't get charged.
Someone else might be able to confirm this or correct my thinking. (edited)
Yep this is what i mean. Often when you go to a mall in turkey - All the ATMs are together. Every single one of them charge...including AKBANK which I've seen some people say don't charge. Is this normal?
Any idea which bank u used?
Which city are you in, in Turkey?, in Istanbul, I found a HSBC bank and withdrew cash from there without fees and in Antalya, I found a bank called Ziraat Bankasi which also didn't charge any fees to withdraw. I also have Starling and I paid for a lot of things using contactless but also cashed out a few thousand lira without fees, I did get caught out at a lot of cash machines but those 2 cash machines I know didn't charge any fees to withdraw.
Im in Antalya also.i haven't tried HSBC but i definitely tried a Ziraat ATM and it tried to charge me 7%
I withdrew TL100 and got slapped with 5TL ATM charge. I did accept DCC with Revolut beforehand. There were five ATM's next to each other and each charged 5TL.
This also tallies with your 5% charge, despite accepting DCC.
In the grand scheme of things, it's a poor country ( not as poor as 3rd world countries in Europe and Asia ) and they lag behind services provided by 1st world countries like ours. (edited)
Next day I went to each cash points and found Ziraat Bankasi does not charge comission. I used both Starling and Revolut however found the latter offer the best rate.
I personally avoid airport ATM wherever I am
No better place for naughty people to setup a scam terminal or set up ripoff fees for tourists
