    Audi A3 problem when fuelling up - pump clicks as if the tank is full even when empty!

    As the title suggests, I have just bought a second hand Audi A3 and when I take it to fuel up, the handle of the fuel pump clicks straight away as if the tank is full when it isn't. It keeps clicking after every 10-15 pence of fuel.

    I tried inserting the nozzle in as far as it goes, then I tried inserting it halfway and also tried inserting just the tip of the nozzle into the fuel tank but it still has the problem. I have tried it at a few different stations and different pumps but it still does the same...

    Is there any car experts or audi owners who have had the same problem or have an idea of what it could be?

    Fill at a lower flow rate, sounds like a blocked vapour vent causing back pressure.

    What age is your Audi? I have a Mk II Octavia which uses the Golf Mk V platform (same as the A3 Mk II) and it's similar, if I stick the nozzle straight in it keeps just stopping as if it was full. I think I need to have the nozzle just into the filler and it goes fine although it sounds a lot worse in your case. As I can get fuel into mine ok I've never looked into the issue further.

    After putting the nozzle in, turn it slightly to the right by about 10-15 degrees. Also pull back the nozzle slightly after inserting before pulling the trigger.

    I suggest this also.

    Turn the nozzle either to the right or to left and squeeze the trigger.
    My old car needed the nozzle to be twisted 90 degrees otherwise the fuel wouldn't go to the tank, but flow back to the nozzle and cause it to cut off.

    You will find some pumps do it more than others, as suggested turn the nozzle until it flows smoothly

    I also have to put the nozzle in turn it slightly and pull it back out a little, it clicks all the time if i keep it straight..

    Its just the angle of which the nozzle hits the inlet into the petrol tank.

    My old rover and my pug 406 do the same things, but i lift the nozzle slightly and it then fills up fine...

    Its just the way that they are designed!!

    just drink the fuel then **** in the tank an hour later.

    I used to have this problem all the time with my vw sharan - I have a different car now but handy to know what caused it!

    get the husband to fill up....thats what i do!

    Thanks for all the replies guys, you've been very helpful, I didn't realise this many people had the same problem... It happened to my Astra the first time I did it but when I pulled the nozze out a bit it was fine, it didn't solve the problem this time... I've tried it at a few different angles but next time I will try it at every angle possible until I get it right!

    Try the nozzle sequence again tomorrow, but do it standing on your head......this works!
