Yesterday i asked for help with getting rid of Norton AV. (Thanks for everyone that gave me advice.. I've now added rep for you. )
I wanted free AV and decided to download AVG but was put into a bit of a conundrum by Faevilangel who said and i quote...

..." I would recommend Avast instead of Avg ........ Avast has less bugs and more reliable & also free. "

Do you agree??

all i ask is that you tell me which one you prefer and why, then i will go with the majority. ;O)

fan of avg for years until version 8 so switched to avast. far less intrusive imho and seems less of a resource hog.

I use AVG and have never had any snags with it

avg used to be great untill v.8- now makes pc too slow and crashes

now use avast- first class

I have used AVG "free" on my 3 computers at home for years.

Have to say that version 8 (current version) has had its problems.

Lately I have had some messages come up in Chinese and German !

The update manager does not always work.

If you take the default options during install it creates a tool bar on your browser (take the non default option and choose not to install the tool bar).

Also the option which checks EVERY web site you visit (even on a Google search) can be a bit of a pain and I have turned it off.

I get the impression some different developers are working on it, or maybe a different company took it over, but whatever has happened I am not as happy with it as i was with V7 which was great.

Funnily enough after the debate yesterday I uninstalled AVG 8 on one of my computers and put Avast on it. Too early to say if it is better or not.

Hmm ... thanks for the pointer. The latest version of AVG has been annoying me more than usual. Might give Avast a go instead...

avg works fine for me!

Avast, since it's virtually silent and you only get pop-ups when something goes wrong.

Same here, that part was really slowing things up for me so I turned off both & & things have been fine, no problems etc. Also when I was installing AVG on another laptop I found there is an option to disable the 2 added browser security add-ons straight away, so I did that.

These security toolbars are becoming quite common - as well as AVG, Zonealarm & BT Yahoo also have them. In theory you could end up with 3 running & a very slow browser

I have had a few problems with AVG (only update related), but seems ok to be.

AVAST! Easy to use, auto updates every day, does not put a drain on system resources. Was using AVG up until july, when i installed AVAST the first time boot scan found 2 viruses that AVG had never found.

I've noticed the latest AVG 8 seems to hog resources too !

If they don't fix it soon i'll be going back to Avast too !

but avira comes out very poorly for actual virus detection in the reports I have seen

Fair enough. Looks like avira has improved since I last checked.

August 2008 independent AV results. Look how poor Mcafee is :w00t:

AVG wasnt too great either letting through 8% of viruses.

Found it interesting that AVGs RAM figures are so low when people say it's bloated. Avast is a far bigger resource hog. Also AVG seems to be scanning a lot more files than Avira so not sure if that's a good or bad thing ?

My Avast software uses 1,200k when idle so no idea where they got 32807K from :?
