Baby with cough/cold - any incredible remedies?

Our 7 month old has developed a cold, with pretty heavy congestion and a nasty cough. We got him checked out at the Doctor today just to make sure he doesn't have a chest infection, and were told it was only viral.

He hardly slept last night, neither did we, and is even worse tonight. He seems to be struggling to breathe through his mouth and therefore keeps almost choking on mucus.

So far we've tried; Vicks on his feet/chest/back/evaporating in boiling water in the room, Olbas Oil on a hanky - but no real success! I've even got this 'snot buster' device that you use to withdraw the mucus from the nose! He's currently asleep on my wife's shoulder and have a bad feeling that's the way tonight is heading.

Today is our anniversary as well, looks like we've gonna have a fun evening.

    Anyone got any suggestions/miracle cures?

Put a pillow UNDER the mattress, to raise his head at a slight angle.

Yeah, sorry, forgot to mention that - already got some towels under the mattress to lift it up a bit.

Issue is he can't seem to drift off - which he's normally very good at.

asda sell those vaporiser things-theres a coupla different ones-plug in diffuser with oils you can put in-Im sure calpol make one of them-we used to find them good.

Oh,and calpol obviously for pain relief and to help sleep.

my parents used to use one of those evaporator thingies with a tealight, they're electric now i believe. but that was always good. Also I guess just try not to get upset about your anniversary. you can celebrate it next week, it's not the actualy day that matters after all, but what it signifies.

drop of whisky or brandy in the bottle

Cheers folks - will get one of those vaporisers tomorrow.

Choc - I think I'll just take the whisky.

Good luck but my mum (a nurse) swore by it when we were growing up :-D

I was about to say about the plug in vapouriser ...We have a Karvol one from boots!....Hope he feels better soon, Its not nice but it does get better....xxx

thats such a shame - for all of you!!! Your heart just goes out to them when they are sick and there isnt much you can do to help.

You have got good advice there but I think it will just need to run its course.

I hope though that you eventually get to celebrate your wedding anniversary!!!

keep on with vicks and karvol on hankie. Also could give calpol every 6 hours to help with temperature

I wouldn't bother buying any cough mixture either, don't think they work.

I believe steam is the best thing:thumbsup:

My boy suffered terrible with colds for his first few months, pillow under cot, vicks on feet, olbas oil in room away from the cot, calpol and sometimes sleeping in his pushchair helped as he was a little raised compared to the cot.

I really feel for you its horrible!! my boy had an awful one at 3 weeks old, if he doesnt improve within 5 days back too the docs I would advise

My 5 month old daughter is the same. The doctor said it's a viral cough and there's nothing he can do. My daughter finds it easier to sleep on her side as the mucus doesn't gather at the back of her throat as much. We put a pillow behind her t stop her rolling onto her back and it does the trick.

You can get saline nasal drops from the chemist, these really helped with our baby. You give your baby a couple of drops a few times a day and it helps unblock them a bit.

Plus Karvol capsules on a tissue in the room help for nights.

Also watch what you are feeding him - if he is on solids now, make sure you don't give him any dairy products as these will create more mucus.

just lots of hugs and back rubs

I can recommend Medised, doesn't taste as good as calpol but has a sedative - but don't use it too much as the sedative effect lessens.
