    Backing up my dvd collection??

Does anyone know the best way to backup my dvd collection? I would ideally like to back them all up onto my external hard drive, but would like to know the fastest way of ripping the dvds? Anyone know any programs that are good for this and fairly quick as i have alot of dvds id like to backup. Thanks in advance

depends how you want them stored. if you want full dvd rips (4-7gb each) then I reccomend 'dvd decrypter' the simplest to use. 15 mins each
if you want them in .avi (700mb etc) then you will need a different program that converts them, which will take ~1-2 hours each.

The fastest way isn't to rip the discs at all, but to get a Newsgroups account and a VIP membership to NZBMatrix, and then just queue up a ton of downloads instead. Okay, it's slower in the sense that it'll maybe take longer to get the movies onto your PC if your connection isn't very fast, but the alternative is a hideously repetitive slog of swapping disc after disc after disc with a 30 minute wait inbetween. Use DVD Shrink if you want to do it manually, that used to be my favourite when I had no internet connection.

google "dvd decrypter" - this will copy the dvd to your harddrive.

then "Auto GK" will take the dvd folder, compress the film to Xvid format, at the settings and file size you require.

The DVD rip will take about 5 - 10 minutes per disc, the compression will take much longer. Using Auto GK, you can however queue the jobs, so you can set it to do loads, and leave the computer all day and night, it will even turn off your computer once its done.

I backed up my dvd collection some time ago, took ages, but was worth it.

    EDIT:
quickest/most efficient way i found was to rip a batch of dvds, that part is fairly quick - then set it to compress them all overnight

i think the 1st option will be best, i have a 1tb drive so should get most of them on that, plus its the quickest way lol. Thanks for your help, i will be looking for that program now

i do have an account with a newsgroup and membership to nzbmatrix but if i can rip a dvd in 5-10 mins, id prefer to do it that way. thanks tho

My personal preference for ripping DVDs is the combination between AnyDVD and CloneDVD, AnyDVD is a background running program which removes any copy protection from the disk so its sectors are read normally by CloneDVD which can compress a DVD-9 onto a single layer 4.7GB disk, or if you wish copy it without compression on a Dual Layer...both procedures on the fly.

Just in case you are not aware, it is ILLEGAL to break the CSS copyright protection, and the only way to copy DVD's is by breaking the protection with some kind of software

Where in UK law does it state this? All I can find on Google is for America, land of the not so free where all judges are paid off by large corporations to protect their interests. Where Real Networks were banned from allowing people to copy their DVD's.

edit: the Copyright Directive covers us just reading it now....
    edit2: okay found it

    "Rights management information
    25. After section 296ZF (inserted by regulation 24(1)) there shall be inserted -

    " Rights management information
    296ZG Electronic rights management information
    (1) This section applies where a person (D), knowingly and without authority, removes or alters electronic rights management information which -
    (a) is associated with a copy of a copyright work, or
    (b) appears in connection with the communication to the public of a copyright work, and
where D knows, or has reason to believe, that by so doing he is inducing, enabling, facilitating or concealing an infringement of copyright."

    296ZA Circumvention of technological measures

    (1) This section applies where -
    (a) effective technological measures have been applied to a copyright work other than a computer program; and
    (b) a person (B) does anything which circumvents those measures knowing, or with reasonable grounds to know, that he is pursuing that objective.
    (2) This section does not apply where a person, for the purposes of research into cryptography, does anything which circumvents effective technological measures unless in so doing, or in issuing information derived from that research, he affects prejudicially the rights of the copyright owner.

Apparently you can circumvent the technologies if you're doing it for research, sorted.

To OP you can get about 250 DVD's to a terabyte drive? Don't know how many I've got now, last count in July was 125 and they are all packed away in the attic, so I think I might do this one day also

think i may do this myself and transfer some onto my playstation, or just get a drive and put them on there, i have about 250+ atm, once i have copied them doing the odd new one occasionally will be fine!

Anyone know whats good to use with a mac?
