    Clean your oven!!!

Depending on the joint it may be best to cover in foil too.

so your room is filled with joint smoke? you students......

does the oven show when temperature is reached? a light turn off or on at a certain time? does this work (if it does Im assuming the oven thermostat is ok)

Probably had too much fat on the joint, too hot or it was too close to the element...Very dangerous! Joints need slow roasting so it should be at the bottom of the oven...

Yeah the baking tray had this pool of fizzing fat on it and I put it on the top shelf.

if your room was filling with smoke that quickly then i'd bet it was touching the element. a roast tastes nicer if it's cooked slowly

We have a winner. That is the answer. That's a good tip by master chief and put a bit of foil over it and slow roast. BTW, Well done for trying to cook a nice meal too!

ok, about 45 minutes at 180, then check it, and should be done except want a bit more brown (or wait 10 mins then check again), if so turn up oven to 220, for 5-10 mins
(double check its cooked by cutting right into the centre and peeking, juices are clear)

take out of oven, rest for 5-10 minutes and carve it up
