    Bank charge of £39 wt

just had a charge (first on my account in 6 years and god knows how it happened) on my bank account for 39 quid, WTF, for an item that was £17, when did the price of these charges go up, it was £15 the last time i got one, I am totally shaking with shock, 39 quid, thats half my shopping bill for my family of 6. :x

    I truley can't believe that.

By law is it not limited to £12 just call them up harass them say your gonna leave etc etc, normally as its a one off they will waive it.

go in and speak to the manager. just tell him/her that it is completely unreasonable high charge, for what was a simple mistake. i had to do it yesterday. got it reversed on the spot. Stupid Bank Of Scotland grrr.

No, the law does not say £12. Harassment is not a good idea.

OP simply gave them a call, for a 1st offence they usually let you off.

    yep thats the one,
I'm horrified, i'm on a real tight budget but always make sure my bills are paid, if only to avoid getting charges (which to me are like waisted money), i'm going to phone them later coz i'll just get angry or cry just now, can't believe how upset i am, my face is all tingley like i've just had a bad fright watching a scarey movie.

Bloody Hell, that's a lot of money. I hope you get some joy when you phone them, good luck.

Do you have a boyfriend? ;-)

Seeing as its the first charge in a while explain to them and say its unresonably high and you cant pay it.

They'll usually reverse it as a one off.

    what bank are you with?
i recently tried re-claiming my charges back with hsbc which caused an endless amount of problems
    i had an overdraft-not i get charged £10 for going £10 overdrawn
i had a bank card-they cancelled it without notice and when i baught things through paypal they had bounced then my bank re-charged me £30 for it bouncing

its not worth the hassle honestly, you have been charged so best leave it.
i have wrote to manager who replied with a "our charges are lawful and we will NOT be giving you your money back"sort of thing but said if i wanted it back i have to get in touch with the FOC which aint worth the hassle for just over £100 charges

this is best idea if you go ahead i personally would see the manager to find out everything and make sure your account is still safe and why you were actually charged as the people on the phone dont really care as its not their money

Nah - Halifax / RBoS charge £39 and i think you only get a week to pay it then it goes up £39 a day.

Highly unlikely that a manager is going to see a customer for this.

Don't stress about it sweetie, give them a wee call & explain & they'll probably reverse the charge... A couple of weeks ago I stupidly transferred £80 into my savings account (use savings acct to fund paypal) instead of £8... Then £60's worth of stuff came off my card & I got a massive charge for it & a charge for being overdrawn... I called them up & explained & they reversed both charges Hopefully you'll get lucky & get someone nice on the other end of the phone!

I had this with them couple of years ago, had the charges refunded after threatening to leave and did anyway, disgraceful. I will never deal with them again, just my way.

    Halifax/BoS

Evil evil company, I used to use Halifax a lot until they charged me £30 for a £1 direct debit which bounced as I was a few pence short of £1 in.

And at the start of this year my dad paid in £15 and they typed it as 15 thousand and had to close and reopen his account meaning all his direct debits were cancelled and they promised to sort them but he got late payment charges from all the people he had direct debits too.

    Still isnt fully sorted.

have you thought of getting an overdraft facility for when accidents like this happen, when you phone or go onto branch to discuss this they should offer you this facility so this doesnt happen again

thanks guys, i phoned them and spoke to a nice guy there, Orange internet applied for my DD 14 days early this is why i wasn't prepared, the man reversed the charge sue to this after i explained that the DD should not have come out according to the DD garentee proceedures(it was defo not a delayd payment), gona get intouch with orange and see what they have to say for themselves ,

Thanks for the info sassie but i'd rather not get an overdraft, I know it would be handy, but i don't want to go along the lines of having it there as a reserve and getting used to it or abusing it,( my sis got into a lot of debt and i saw what a mess that created for her and i don't want to put my fam through anything like that - that is a personal choice) but thanks you for your help xx

firstly, contact Orange and ask for compensation as they have cost you £39 (they dont need to know you have had it refunded, they will just need a copy of your statement, send them the one you have that shows the charge)

secondly, my wife went £1.20 overdrawn and got charged £28 with BofS, just as a precaution I put a small £50 overdraft in place to cover the odd eventuality when these mistakes happen. It just makes sense, you just need to say to yourself, you have x amount left to spend and dont spend more than you have.

If I'm not mistaken you should be entitled to a refund of the payment taken out by orange as they are in breach of the direct debit guarantee, I'd check your other statements as well to see if they've messed up any other times before giving them a ring, you never know, you might get a few extra quid.

I had my charges refunded, they did a similar thing to me ages ago.

I will say you need to send them copies of statements showing the bank charge, and they also compensated me a small charge for my inconvenience
