.....does your bank charge for unpaid items? (as in when you don't have enough money in your account to cover Direct Debits etc)

Yep, that's what I mean.

All Banks charge for customers spending their money.

Some, more than others.

£25 at the Abbey but give them a call explain and they drop it.

They do, charges are listed on banks web sites.

I'm having a bit of a job finding some of them!

get yourself an agreed overdraft with the bank, it doesnt need to be loads just enough for emergencies, i have had one on my accounts for years, never used it, but its there should something happen
