Barcelona set to step up pursuit of Liverpool star Fernando Torres

Barcelona are prepared to make a £70 million move for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres this summer.

Sandro Rosell, the new Barcelona president is determined to pair Torres with his international striker partner David Villa, who the Catalan giants recently acquired from Valencia, according to The Mirror.

Chelsea and Manchester City are also ready to open their wallets for the 26-year-old superstar who suffered through an injury-plagued season at Anfield this season.

Any attempts to sign Torres might hinder Barcelonas chance to bring Arsenal skip Cesc Fabregas to the Nou Camp as the Catalan giants would struggle to afford both players.

Torres, who played for Atletico Madrid during his time in La Liga, has acknowledged that the only club in Spain he would join would be Barcelona.

With Rafael Benitez joining Inter Milan, Liverpool is left managerless at the moment, and with the turmoil occurring at Anfield there are fears that Torres and Steven Gerrard could leave the club this summer.

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho would be very interested in bringing Gerrard with him to the Bernabeu, while a lack of Champions League football could lead Torres to leave Liverpool as well.

Whilst we read this every day, it would make sense for them to be trying a massive signing. That is what new presidents do. With that in mind, it could pretty much be anyone.

    Article yesterday regarding Torres.

Fernando Torres admits all of Liverpool's players are still nursing the pain of a disastrous 2009/10 season.

The Reds could only muster a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League last season, meaning they missed out on the gravy train of the UEFA Champions League.

All of those connected with the club suffered over the course of the campaign, with players, coaches and supporters unable to stop the rot.

Star striker Torres admits he was left bitterly disappointed by Liverpool's failings, but insists all of the squad know they must do much better.

He especially feels for club captain and Merseyside native Steven Gerrard, for whom results at Anfield mean more than most.

    Family
"This season Liverpool have been written and talked about a lot," Torres told the Daily Star.

"But what people forget is that fundamentally last season hurt the players and the boss.

"The club means a lot to us and the fans mean a lot to us. We didn't want to give them a season like that.

"Trust me when I tell you nobody will be hurting more than Stevie. He is Mr Liverpool and he sees the Liverpool fans as family. Last season really hurt him.

"He desperately wants to win the Premier League with Liverpool and every season that he does not do it hurts a bit more."

    Leader
Torres, who is currently on World Cup duty with Spain, hopes he will get the chance to go head-to-head with his club colleague in South Africa this summer as he believes Gerrard deserves to be strutting his stuff on the biggest stage.

He added: "He is the best captain I have ever played under. As long as we don't meet earlier, I see it being an England versus Spain final.

"They have fantastic players all over the pitch. I have been telling the Spanish lads all about them.

"I see Gerrard and Rooney on the same level as Messi, Xavi, Kaka, Ronaldo and the other top players.

"It would be a dream to play England in the final and an England-Spain final would be a showcase of the two best nations in world football."

    :-D

Instead of the £70m we'll have Messi

Seriously though, I honestly can't see what Barcelona want him for - they've played a 4-3-3 (with one main striker) for god knows how long, I can't see them changing their formation all of a sudden. Villa and Torres don't play that well together either, that's why Spain are most likely going to start with Torres on the bench tomorrow.

Yossi Benayoun has taken a significant step towards leaving Liverpool for … Yossi Benayoun has taken a significant step towards leaving Liverpool for Chelsea by agreeing in principle a four-year contract with the Barclays Premier League champions.Although a fee has yet to be agreed between the clubs, such is Benayoun’s determination to quit Anfield that Liverpool officials have been braced for his departure for some time.Benayoun, 30, is known to have fallen out with Rafael Benítez and it was widely assumed that the Israel midfield player would stay if the manager left. But even the removal of Benítez from the equation has not been enough to convince him to remain.Chelsea are keen to recruit Benayoun to fill the void that will be created when Joe Cole leaves Stamford Bridge on a free transfer this summer and have made Liverpool an offer in the region of £4 million. That bid has been rejected by Liverpool, who feel Benayoun is worth at least twice that amount. But the club are increasingly resigned to his departure and a compromise fee of about £5.5 million is likely to be agreed.Benayoun has completed only 12 months of a four-year contract worth £55,000 a week and only last month claimed that “if it depended on me, I would stay here and retire in Liverpool. The fans are the best in the world, but it depends on a lot of things.”However, the lure of playing in next season’s Champions League, for which Liverpool failed to qualify, and a substantial pay rise have contributed to Benayoun’s desire to leave the club he joined from West Ham United in July 2007.Should Benayoun complete his move to West London, he could be the first of a number of players to leave Liverpool in what is likely to be a summer of upheaval in the wake of Benítez’s exit.Javier Mascherano is keen to follow the Spaniard to Inter Milan and is learning Italian while on World Cup duty with Argentina. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have refused to discuss their futures until after the tournament and are waiting to see if Liverpool can match their ambitions before deciding whether to stay or go.

And so it begins....... don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I wonder if Torres feels the same?
