A neighbour's dog (actually in the next street but the house backs onto ours) constantly barks throughout the day. We have put up with this for about two years, hoping that it would calm down, but it is getting worse. We can't even open the cutlery drawer in the kitchen without the dog barking. It barks at twittering birds, planes, doors opening, and even if one of us coughs inside the house! It must have amazing hearing:) Most of the neighbours have complained, but nothing is ever done about it.
Has anyone else had this problem? How did you resolve it?

Rspca - say its being neglected and barking for attention (which it doesn't get) - at the least they will point out (forcefully) to the owners that the noise affects others

Have you rung the council?

You can complain about the noise and the cruelty.

Print this off from defra Is your dog barking too much? and give it to the owner: defra.gov.uk/env…pdf

If the problem doesn’t get resolved
If you don't take steps to solve the problem, and
your local authority receives complaints about the
noise your dog is making, the authority will
investigate the complaint. The local authority may
seek to resolve the problem by mediating between
you and the complainants, but where it does not do
so, or where such mediation is unsuccessful, and
the authority is satisfied that the noise amounts to a
statutory nuisance, it will serve you with an
abatement notice requiring the noise to be reduced
to an acceptable level.
If you fail to comply with an abatement notice, you
could face prosecution and, if convicted, a fine of
up to £5,000 (and possibly further daily fines of up
to £500 for each day on which the offence
continues after conviction).
;-) that'll learn em

Our labrador never barks, hes only barked a dozen or so times since we have had him, and then only when there is danger. Just shows how its the owner thats the problem not the dog. I assumed ours was so good because of his breed.

As for the barking dog issue, its environmental health dept at the council who deal with it, they will take a report and ask you to fill in a noise diary, then record the noise over a couple of days then prosecute. I assume in the meantime they also contact the owners and tell them that a complaint has been raised, (they do not give your name) and it may make the owners think, usually though it takes a full prosecution. Good luck,

Just make sure you have the right dog before you do anything, about a year ago I got a letter which just said "Keep the dog quite" (yes, quite!). Was in the house on my own at the time and was quite intimidated by it. Our dog barks very rarely, and we always stop her straight away. Worst thing was, there was no name or address so we couldnt explain this to whoever sent the letter! Our neighbours were really surprised by it and said that they wouldnt even know we had a dog if they didnt see her!

There are 2 dogs on the next street (so our row of gardens touches theirs) a few houses down, who I cant see from our house, so dont know which house it is, but they bark constantly. They are obviously left outside all day and night and seem to be barking for attention.

I can understand the annoyance of a dog barking all the time, but like I said, just make sure its the right dog!

Are the owners council tenants? If so you can make a complaint to the council.

Buy a high frequency siren point in direction of dogs problem solved. 17000+hz to keep the kids away too.

You need to speak to the owners first and express your concerns. If that does not work contact the enviromental health dept at your local council.

Call the JFK, he'll sort that dog for true

Agree with paddy. Stop bumping ancient threads

If the owners are not there during the day could you not walk up to the fence and every time the dog stops barking chuck a treat over the fence and shout 'quiet'. Do that a few times and then when you are satisfied it has learned just lean out of you door and say the command if it bothers you.
