BBC1 The Day Immigrants Left on-now

About taking immigrants out of low paid manual work with British unemployed for a day or two

    IMO:
Last year the head of Big Issue on News Week said that there is a benefit culture in Britain because they are used to seeing their parents/older generations just sitting on benefits doing nothing, so also go on benefits, have kids early to have more benefits etc etc.
I agree with this, continental Europeans will be harder working, less moany, less whiny, do the hours they are paid for, and ultimately better value for money. The window company my family uses the main work is 100% polish workers, surveyors irish, owner irish.
Always give the best price, best work.

To quote an employer earlier in the program: "If i were to employ the local unemployed only, I'd be out of business"

    Yeah am watching that too.

It's reckon its probably a little dramatised for TV, but after 5 mins, there has already been 1 guy not show up for work, 2 guys 30 mins late and one of those being disrespectful, if not a little racist!

    Yeah I reply too slow...

    Watching it

Article in the paper today about Brits living abroad claiming jobseekers allowance and other benefits while living abroad, how is this possible, they no longer live here yet can still claim all kinds of benfits while sunning it up and I am living and working in britain in this crappy weather makes you wonder who the chump is.

People who sit around doing nothing on benefits are only lazy because they are ALLOWED to sit around doing nothing on benefits.

If people knew they would get no money if they did not work they would soon get off their a*se.

We have bred a generation of people who now chose living on benefits as a career option.

As I heard someone on the radio say the other day "benefits used to be a safety net, now it is a hammock".

If you add on top of that the thousands and thousands who are claiming benefits illegally - pretending they have a bad back or whatever, or those claiming housing benefit or tax credit they are not entitled to, then it is a great way to bankrupt the country (which we basically have)..

I think it's related alot to appreciation.

Foreign worker: can and do make their money stretch more and do work harder

English enemployed used to benefits: really does want some cushy unskilled job, which does not exist, so benefits looks better and more importantly nowhere near same appreciation of foreign worker

Did you know if a polish man comes here to work that we pay child benefit TO HIS CHILDREN IN POLAND (this applies to any person who comes here to work from an EU country).

Earlier the program showed the in late 90s applications for manual work dropped, alot, the Blair boom years where benefits rose, and hard graft from UKers fell.... so they HAD TO open up labour markets, CBI were screaming for it.

One option is to limit benefits to say not more 5 years in your lifetime or 2 years without a break. After that food stamps only.

Would create social problems but we can no longer afford much else

Watch it on the iplayer live, or when it has finished

    bbc.co.uk/ipl…er/

I love how almost everyone interviewed has said something to the effect of "I'd do any job", and then moan about the job they are doing when they get a chance to do it.

I feel really bad for the people that would actually work and are stuck trying to find jobs, that tonight are going to be cringingly embarrassed by some of these people.

I doubt the UK can afford to lose 3million+ foreign workers mostly doing the manual work so many British born and bred (not highlighted by The Sun or Daily Mail/Express Group) that don't want to.

Don't forget UK has a brain drain too, going abroad after going to uni here.

Trouble is some people who are severly disabled or mentally ill have to be on benefits all their life.

My wife works with special needs people and some are given over £20,000 a year in benefits to pay for their 24 hour care and support.

This will probably be for all their life.

The new rules on non EU is interesting making it harder for Asians to come over.

UK #1 meal is a Curry, yet they need the experienced cooks etc of the Asians, interesting when British Empire stolen and ravaged India so badly in 18th/19th century.

The locals on the highstreet, all moaning about what the immigrants are taking, NONE of them mentioned the fact that the employers prefer them and were intent on blaming the immigrants alone, not politicians, not employers, not a unemployed lazy unskilled barely qualifying workforce.

This sounds like a typical reality show trick. Pick people who for one reason or another make good dramatic tv and then edit to increase the entertainment.

All this discussion of workers around Europe competing ignores how business and industry use workers against each other to push everyones wages and conditions down. Sure if you are from Poland young healthy and desperate to feed you family you will live in squalid conditions to undercut other workers. Ultimately your health suffers and you probably die young.

What happened to the idea of society moving forward and peoples lives getting better. Do we give that all up and just fight like dogs over a bone.

The French, closed labour off market, similar to UK economy, but they have 20%/15million immigrant (5times bigger than UK) population doing alot of the manual jobs in a country where French born get 5 years of University education free, so alot of French born are over educated... if only we had that problem.

I agree with you though, alot of producer tricks to get the liberal type point of view across doesn't mean it's entirely wrong.

I have to ask though, what would of occured WITHOUT the immigrant workers in the last decade? Had UK kept it's labour forced closed off??

Well sadly most of us here will have to work longer than our parents and still be in trouble later with worthless pensions to pay for all the scroungers.
I'm amazed how many social security families are now living in private housing estates...many houses snapped up simply to rent out and then families and individuals installed in them who couldn't possibly afford to buy th esame house. no problem, housing benefits pay. Not fair on the folks who are working to see long term professional benefit people living in the same street and couldn't give a toss about the house etc. Many have cars and about 3 or 4 kids. There isn't enough differential between workers and the lazy asses now.

they are showing themselves up 1 thinks poland is a third world country lol

The education system is failing people. So we have a poorer workforce, leading to more people going on benefits.

More benefits = less money for schools so you have more people being poorly educated, who then require benefits.....

It's going to become a bigger problem.

Solution - cut benefits severely, put that revenue into education and reverse the trend of the last 4 decades or so.

Isn't benefits a form of bribary? Look at USA, much harsher benefits system, food stamps etc, but also severe crime, on average as a result. The money you want for Education would get partially diverted for Police/CPS/Prisons imo.

    I guess so.

    Greed rules the world

I think all British farmers are really suffering at the cost of the supermarkets, and that isn't really right, they are squeezing them untill they can't afford to stay in business. And this needs to be sorted. As for the immigrants doing a better job..if the british can't keep up then tough..it was clear to see from that allbeit biased program that the british labourers were lazy..

Yes of course, loads of English people go over to Poland to work dont they.

And dont forget, they get OUR Child Benefit rate when the money goes so much furhter in Poland.

And prey where does the EU get the money it give us, from us in the first place of course.

All they are doing is giving us back the money we gave them (and costing million in "red tape" in the process). The EU is one bad joke.
