Beef Meat with spikes

Found 23rd Feb 2014
Hi,

Got some 100% beef chunks from pets at home and it appears to have a spiky skin. Does anyone know what this is and what part of the cow it is? It looks like a hedgehog.

That's put me right off my bacon bun.

Is it hard or squishy? Looks like tripe
Just gross!
Well done choc for finding that... cow lips! I can only describe the fact that I keep going back to look despite having to stifle a scream, as horrified fascination!
So pets at home are charging £7 a bag for cows lips, hardly 100% beef then. Think I'll stick to getting it from butchers, doesn't cost much more and is 'proper' meat
That is **** gross, the only thing I can think of is that the skin was pressed with something very hot and then pulled off, like a waxy effect, no part of the cow has spikes!
How big is that piece? Is there a chance it could be tongue?
The chunks vary in size, but the spikes are on most pieces
Read the link in #4

David and I almost **** ourselves when we took a good look at the beef lips we had brought home from the meat market. This is honestly the scariest looking food we’ve ever seen — even more so because it comes from a cow rather than some other crazy reptile/bird/fish thing where you would expect slime and spikes. Once we toughened up, there was a huge pay off in terms of yumminess.

Not all bad then ! oO

its cow lips, choc established that. tongue is nothing like that, thank god!
What weight of meat did you get for the £7? Can't help thinking there must be better options! apart from anything else, that is skin and will be hard for the animals to chew through!

2kg frozen, the equivalent in mince is probably a similar price. I just presumed '100% natural beef chunks' would be half decent meat given it's for pets and £7 a pop.

Our dog wouldn't touch it when defrosted and raw as it was too tough. Cooked and spikes removed he'll eat it but it's still pretty tricky to cut
