I don't disagree thay they should face severe consequences, and I don't wish my comments to come across as though I don't find this person's crimes abhorrent, but how can a supposed civilised society administer a lifetime of suffering as a punishment for a crime? How is that any better?

    Civilised Society? X)

Punishments need to fit the crimes or crimes will continue to flourish. Its sad that we should need to punish so severely as it is uncivilised. Uncivilised crimes need uncivilised punishment.

    "Supposed civilised society".

Crime will always flourish. Crime flourished when we had the death penalty. Only nostalgia and the lack of proper reporting of crimes would suggest otherwise. There is no proof whatsoever that harsher punishments result in a fall in crime.

If the killing of another person is the most abhorrent of crimes then how can the killing of another person be an acceptable punishment?

Tougher punishment would see a fall in crime longer sentences have to see a fall in crime when most reoffend and they wouldnt be able to

Because the punishment has to fit the crime.

I dont believe in killing them as that doesnt do the crime justice, just prison till you die.

This man gave up his rights when he committed these crimes. I'm pretty sure his victims wanted to live-he wants to die: let's keep him alive then-it seems a more suitable punishment than granting his wishes.

The question was never about the ethics. Thats a whole different discussion. While I dont usually agree with an 'eye for an eye' it would be difficult to keep that faith if one of your children was killed in cold blood.

The question was would crime fall. Yes some would.

I initially objected to torture as a form of punishment. I Have no issue with long sentences which reflect the crime commited. Although in a perfect world I would like to see rehabilitation.

You cant have it both ways we dont live in a perfect world.

rehabilitation X) how can you rehabilitate when life is so easy inside if I left prison haunted with what happens I wouldnt reoffend.

Thats for lower crimes obviously murder, rape and majority of violent crimes would be inside forever

I didn't suggest that we did live in a perfect world, and I think that your image of what life inside is like may be clouded by biased and/or sensasionalist reporting.

Rehabilitation does occur, and more should be done to encourage it. Not everybody with a criminal record is destined to live the life of a ne'er-do-well criminal. Surely there is a path to redemption, even for those who commit a serious crime, and especially for those who are changed characters?

The sad truth of the matter is generally crime does not fall, rather - and quite horrendously some figures actually show a rise in serious crime in countries that do have the death penalty.

We can easily dismiss the theory that it's a deterrent as the very fact that people are still being executed for crimes is proof positive that it is no deterrent.

Sorry; I'm very much aware that it's all very well pointing out the negatives in society's attempts at putting things right, but it still leaves us with the problem of what we should actually do (and society must do something) - and again I'm sorry because I really don't know ( I seem to be ok at spotting what doesn't work, but I'm fairly useless in spotting what might work - sorry).

No I know first hand Ive still got some very good friends inside too I bet at least 10 of my mates from our gang in school are inside now. I know loads that have been inside most are in and out. I know 2 that have stated they will commit crime and go straight back in as they prefer it in there but guess what they are not listened to and are released.
Like peados theres some that dont want to be released as they know they will re offend but our justice system cant just lock them up for good even though they know they are going to reoffend they let them out.

I disagree about rehab, people just change they choose to change.

Theres no redemption for certain people that have done certain crimes.
