We're going to need some more information.

How are you trying to set it up? Are you using the installation CD? What bit are you stuck at? etc.

hi
setting it up as instruction say

yeah i used the disc but when i put it in nothing happens.

router shows problem with modem - amber light showing on router

Have you gone into My Computer & selected your disc drive & looked for setup.exe on the disc?

Original Poster

i just followed instructions in router box

do i need to do that?

Who is your ISP, and what's the model number of the router.

If it has an installation process on the CD its worth giving it a go. Could you give us the exact model number of the router so we can look it up on the belkin website?

Original Poster

im with virgin media

model number is F5D8236-4 v3

mind im not very good at computers but i did follow instructions, tried for 2 hours last night. i did go on belkin website and it just said same as instructions

What is the actual problem you are encountering?

ie: connects to router, but Internet is not working / list of available wireless networks doesn't show your new Belkin router / etc...

When the cd is in the drive, go to my computer, right-click on the cd/dvd drive & select explore. Is there any sort of setup.exe file in there?

Did you get all the way through the instructions or get stuck at a particular one?

and this means what? have i gave u the wrong number??

Run a cable from the ntl modem, into the WAN port on the router, turn off modem and router, turn on router, then turn on modem, wait until lights stop flashing.

Click on wireless networks in your system tray and you should see one thats unsecure, join that one and let us know if you can.

after following instructions, router has light up panel on front and modem is lighting up amber which means modem problem.................. it comes with no other instructions that installation so im at a loss as to what problem could be

Assuming that you are connected to the router now, turn the Virgin cable modem off and on again.

Broadband modems bond with the first device they see. If you unplug the cable modem from your computer and plug it into the WAN/Internet port of the router instead it needs to be turned off and on again, before it will actually talk to the router.

whats a ntl modem??? could my modem be too old or not the correct one?

The box with the lights on it, will have a white cable running into it and another cable running out of it, will be a small blue thing, or silver if it's an old version.

im not using the router

The information you have given is very sparse. Presumably you can log in to the router itself by either establishing a connection to it from a PC by network cable or wireless? Assuming you are doing this, then are you saying the router is not connecting to Virgin. You would have to give your user name and password which have to be exact.

Sorry, with you I meant the laptop.

You don't need a user name or password if your on cable, unless your on virgin ASDL service.

virginmedia.com/hel…php

Look at the list of modems at the bottom, what one does yours look like?

You'll need one to connect the laptop to the router to set it up initially.

Do you even have a modem or do you receive your internet through the Virgin set top box?

oh i can see that no i didnt do that but i will now

Right, you didn't say it was a laptop.

Plug the yellow cable into the WAN port on the router making sure other end is plugged into modem.

Turn off modem and router, then turn router back on, then modem, and enable wireless card on the laptop.

Not sure if it helps, but here is how mine is set up:

1) The white virgin media cable into the virgin media modem
2) Ethernet cable then plugged into the "Internet" port on the virgin media modem
3) The other half of the ethernet cable into the wireless routers "Internet" port

Then you turn the the virgin media modem on first (wait for a tick to show) once the tick shows then turn the wireless router on. Leave everything on default on the wireless router no login details are needed, just enable WPA2 and set a password.

If this doesn't work maybe you've bought an ADSL router instead of a cable one?

i've done all that but router light shows problem with modem still

Have you tried restoring the router to its factory defaults & starting again?

Good  now plug that into the virgin media modems "Internet" port and then the other end into the "Internet" port of the wireless router.

Make sure both router and modem are turned off, then turn the modem on wait till a tick shows then turn the wireless router on. If all goes well you should have connection to the internet.
