    Restore Factory Defaults

    then start over.

In XP go to start>control panel>network connections right click on the connection and select properties, double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), make sure obtain IP address automatically is checked, same with DNS servers. hit ok. Maybe that will work

he/she mentioned that they have changed the ip address on the router no the pc itself.

best option would be to do what I said unless the OP has IT knowledge.

What did you actually do to change it? Did you change the address number range or did you disable DHCP? Do you still get an address from the router, you can check by going to start->run cmd /k ipconfig /all - if you get a 169.254 address it's pretty broken.

You may need to do a factory restart from the router which usually involves pressing in the pinhole reset however this will wipe all your settings - did you take any backups while setting up the router?

Oh yeah, sorry, i misread the OP

No it wouldn't, that should be a last ditch effort as that will wipe all the settings unless the person has backups. It's worth checking to see if there is any sort of DHCP functionality at the moment first.

im guessing the op does not even know what DHCP is.

It would take him/her 5mins to rest the router and create a new wep key.

Your two statements completely contradict each other - in the first you reckon the person has no IT knowledge but then you jump to the opposite way around for the second statement as they apparently can set up a router without issue. You're also assuming they have their ISP details to hand which may not be the case.

It's one command to check for DHCP which I regularly use when supporting remote non-technical users without issue. You should think more carefully about the advice you are giving.

all the OP has to do is reset the router and follow the Manuel again, like they did the first time.

do you have any knowledge in IT?

inb4 you make some some fake degree

I have considerable expertise both practical and academic in IT which is why I am not making the errors you are, again you're making yet another assumption which may not be true, it could be the case someone else set up the router or the details were written down on a piece of paper which has long since been lost. As it's not something people need to regularly have to hand it's not something that's always kept safe.

To the original poster - if you want to try and salvage the router configuration, let us know how you get on. Feel free to PM me if you prefer.

    John

    what isp you with?

The OP took the wrong approach to the problem.. just the same as someone turning their PC off the second something goes wrong.

The best approach would have been to try to recover the IP address without starting from scratch.. which could have been just as simple as pressing the restart switch.

And how did I fail? John knows much more about computers than you do.. and that is what my post was about.

not really, I used my brains, were talking over the net, the OP prob wont know how to access half the stuff johno is on about. So I take all these things onboard like a good computer guy does, and the best thing to do with to just reset everything, takes 2mins. Simple and effective.

its debatable too that John knows more then me about comps either mayne.
